Safety precautions

When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by eliminating any risk of electric shock.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Always take photos or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting them to make reassembly easier.

How to replace the speed control lever

Here’s how you can change out the faulty speed control lever on your KitchenAid stand mixer.

  1. Unplug the mixer from the power outlet.
  2. Lift and turn the beater clockwise to release and remove it.
  3. Lift and remove the mixing bowl.
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver and a hammer to gently tap and remove the trim ring around the planetary gear.
  5. Position a punch on the groove pin and carefully tap it out with a hammer.
  6. Use a flathead screwdriver to pry down the planetary gear from its mounting. Gently work around it to detach it, then set it aside.
  7. Unscrew the Phillips screw at the back of the mixer and carefully remove the cover.
  8. Use a small flathead screwdriver to disconnect the wires connected to the power cord. Detach the white wires first, then the black ones.
  9. Remove the ground wire screw with a Phillips screwdriver and lift the cord out of its strain relief.
  10. If you’re using a U-shaped holder, position it around the mixer head for support. Alternatively, you can use towels to cushion and support the mixer. Carefully tip the mixer onto the support.
  11. If you have a tilt-head mixer, remove the hinge pin with a punch. If you have a bowl-lift model, use a ratchet for extra torque so you can remove the four large Phillips screws holding the base.
  12. Place towels underneath the mixer to catch any grease or debris.
  13. Use a flathead screwdriver to remove all visible screws from the lower half of the mixer.
  14. Carefully separate the housing halves to access the internal parts.
  15. Inspect and clean the inside of the mixer. Replace grease or remove any metal shavings if needed.
  16. Note the position of any washers or locking mechanisms.
  17. Remove the old speed control lever by unscrewing it with a Phillips screwdriver.
  18. Align the new speed control lever with the internal bar and make sure it fits onto the pin properly.
  19. Hold the lever in place while you reattach the screw and washer.
  20. Align the center shaft and any mounting pins as you rejoin the housing halves.
  21. Replace and tighten all screws to hold the base together.
  22. Reattach the power cord wires.
  23. Place the rear cover back on and secure it with the screw.
  24. Align the planetary with the center shaft. Replace the groove pin so that it’s flush and secure.
  25. Carefully fit the trim ring back onto the planetary. Use a rubber mallet if necessary to get a snug fit.
  26. Place the bowl onto the mixer so that it locks into place.
  27. Reattach the beater by aligning it with the shaft so that the locking mechanism is engaged.
  28. Plug in the mixer and test it to check for any problems.
