Safety precautions
Safety should always be a priority when working on any appliance. Here are a few practical tips to help you stay safe:
- Turn off the power to the appliance by unplugging it or switching off the circuit breaker before starting any maintenance or repairs. This protects you from the risk of electric shock.
- Wear insulated gloves to shield your hands from sharp edges, pinching hazards, or debris.
- Work at a steady pace and take your time to avoid accidents or injuries.
- Make sure your workspace is well-lit so you can clearly see and access the parts you’re working on.
- Keep the area clear of clutter, and ensure children and pets stay out of the workspace.
- Never handle internal parts with wet hands. Check that both your hands and the work area are completely dry.
- Refer to your appliance’s user manual for any specific instructions or safety guidelines related to the part or repair.
- Handle parts gently to avoid damage to the appliance or potential injuries from applying too much force.
- Use safety glasses when dealing with chemicals, dust, or large debris to protect your eyes from harm.
- If the appliance was recently used, give it enough time to cool down before working on any heated components.
- Take photos or notes of wiring connections and terminals before disconnecting anything to make reassembly easier.
- Avoid touching exposed wires or terminals. If you must handle wires, use non-conductive tools or wear insulated gloves to minimize the risk of electrical shock.
Shut off the water supply
- Shut off the water supply valve that feeds the refrigerator.
- Locate this valve close to the wall where the fridge water line connects.
- Turn the valve perpendicular to the pipe to cut off the water.
This prevents leaks during the repair work.
Remove interior fridge components
With the water turned off, now remove the inner fridge parts that allow access to the filter housing assembly:
- Pull out the vegetable crisper drawers by sliding them out fully, lifting them up, and removing them.
- Lift up the front of the shelves to detach from the rear hooks and slide out. Remove all shelves.
- Press the locking tabs on the veggie drawer cover and lift up to detach. Slide cover out.
Detach the water supply line
At the rear of the fridge, disconnect the main water supply line from the filter tubing:
- Remove the nut connecting the supply line using pliers or a wrench.
- Press the release collar on the tube connector and detach the line. A bit of residual water will drain out.
- Cap off the open end of the supply valve to prevent leaks.
Remove the access panel and tubing
A few more components need detached to proceed:
- Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the single screw from the bottom of the rear access panel.
- Pry off the panel.
- Press the release collar again to detach the existing filter tubing from the connector.
- Unscrew the bracket holding the tubing in place with a Phillips screwdriver.
Detach filter housing assembly
With all connectors and lines detached, the defective filter housing can now be removed:
- Pull the assembly towards you, releasing it from the locking tab at the bottom.
- Unplug the two electric connectors by pressing on their release tabs.
- Pull the water lines through the openings as you fully remove the assembly.
- Now set it on a flat surface to continue disassembly.
Disassemble the housing assembly
To install the new replacement part, the old housing must be taken apart:
- Use a flathead screwdriver to detach the front decorative cap.
- Set it aside for reuse.
- Remove the three Phillips screws from the perimeter of the housing.
- Carefully pry apart the two halves of the plastic housing using the flathead screwdriver.
- Cut through the water tube using a utility knife to fully separate the halves.
- Discard the old part.
Now the new housing is ready to be reassembled and installed.
Install new housing assembly
The new replacement water filter housing can now be assembled with the existing components:
- Attach the water lines into their ports on the new housing half.
- Join the two housing halves, snapping them together by pressing firmly.
- Replace the three Phillips screws to secure the halves together.
- Snap the decorative front cap back into place.
With the new housing prepped, it’s time to mount it back into the refrigerator.
Remount filter housing assembly
The fully assembled replacement part can now go back into the fridge:
- Feed the water lines through the rear fridge panel and insert the electric connectors.
- Align the housing assembly into position, pressing down to engage the locking tab.
- Replace the rear access panel and screw.
- Reattach the tubing and bracket.
- Push the water supply line back into the connector until it clicks.
- Turn on the water.
Replace interior fridge components
The last steps involve replacing all the fridge interior components:
- Slide the vegetable drawer cover back in, pressing down to engage the side locking tabs.
- Replace the shelves on their rear hooks and slide the drawers back in.
- Give the fridge interior a wipe-down to remove dust and debris from the repair work.
With that complete, your refrigerator now has a fully functional water filtration system once again.
