What is the heating element?

The heating element is the part responsible for heating the water that circulates throughout the dishwasher during wash and dry cycles. It looks like a long cylinder or rod made of metal encased in plastic or ceramic.

  • During wash cycles, it brings the water up to the best temperature of 140-150°F needed to properly dissolve dishwashing detergent and remove food residue and grease.
  • During dry cycles, it quickly heats any remaining moisture to above boiling (212°F) so hot steam can evaporate the water off the dishes.

Without the heating element functioning properly to reach these key temperatures, your dishes simply won’t get fully clean or dry.

Over time with repeated heating and cooling cycles, the element can burn out like a light bulb or develop mineral deposits and scale that cause it to short or fail to conduct heat effectively. Replacing it restores the dishwasher’s washing capability as good as new.

Tools and materials needed

Making sure you have all the right replacement parts and tools on hand before you begin will make the heating element repair process smoother and simpler.

Safety first

Your safety should always be the top priority when performing any appliance repair.

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of electric shock.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Don’t test live voltage with a multimeter if you’re unfamiliar with how to prevent short-circuiting.
  • Consider wearing safety glasses and/or a dust mask when working with chemicals, dust or a large amount of debris to prevent irritation or injury.
  • If your appliance has any parts that hold water, turn off the water supply at the outlet before beginning repairs. Keep towels ready to catch any residual water in the system when removing parts.

Replacement Steps

  1. Open the dishwasher door.
  2. Pull out and remove the lower dish rack.
  3. Remove the lower spray arm by pulling it straight up from its holder.
  4. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the two screws that secure the dishwasher to the countertop.
  5. Carefully pull the dishwasher out from under the counter about halfway to access the back side of the heating element.
  6. Disconnect the wires from the terminals of the heating element. Make sure to take note of how the wires are connected, though the order does not matter for reinstallation.
  7. Use a 1/2-inch wrench to loosen and remove the two mounting nuts holding the heating element in place.
  8. Pull the heating element terminals out through the base of the tub and release the element from the retaining clips inside the dishwasher.
  9. Compare the old heating element with the new one to ensure a proper match. If you need a replacement, you can order one from appliancepartspros.com.
  10. Insert the terminals of the new heating element into the openings in the tub. Align the two white locator dots with the retaining clips and slide the element into place.
  11. Reattach the mounting nuts by hand and then tighten them with the 1/2-inch wrench to secure the element.
  12. Reconnect the wires to the heating element terminals. Ensure the plastic insulators are in place. It does not matter which wire goes on which terminal.
  13. Carefully slide the dishwasher back under the counter.
  14. Secure the dishwasher to the countertop using the two Phillips screws.
  15. Reinstall the lower spray arm by pressing it down onto the center hub until it locks. Check that it spins freely.
  16. Slide the lower dish rack back into place.
  17. Close the dishwasher door.
  18. Turn the water supply back on and plug in the dishwasher or restore power at the breaker.
  19. Run a test cycle to confirm the heating element is working and that the dishwasher is operating correctly.
