Safety precautions

When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before attempting any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of injury from electric shock.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts, pinching hazards and debris.
  • Take your time and don’t rush while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access the interior parts.
  • Clear your workspace of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with bare wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check your user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions for your part or appliance.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause injury.
  • Wear safety glasses when working with chemicals, dust or cleaning large debris to prevent injury.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time for any heating parts to cool down before working on it.
  • Take pictures or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting to prevent any problems with reassembly.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Don’t test wiring with a multimeter for live voltage if you’re unfamiliar with how to prevent short circuiting when testing.
  • Turn off the water supply at the outlet before beginning repairs to any appliance parts that hold water. Have towels ready for any residual water in the system when removing parts.

Replacement steps

Step 1: Removing the old fill tube assembly

  1. Start by taking off the rear access panel, which is held on by four-quarter-inch screws. Use the nut driver to remove them. Pull off the panel and set it aside.
  2. There will be a water inlet line connecting to the valve at the bottom. Place a towel underneath to catch drips, then use the open-ended wrench to detach this line from the valve. Lift up on the nut while pulling down on the tubing.
  3. Next, remove the two-quarter-inch screws securing the water inlet valve itself using the nut driver again. Take out the valve.
  4. Before fully disconnecting the old fill tube, release it from a plastic bracket clipped over the tubing. Use the flat screwdriver to detach this bracket.
  5. You can now slide the fill tube out of the valve. Make sure to have that towel ready beneath, as water may spill out.

Step 2: Installing the new fill tube assembly

  1. Start by prepping the new replacement part. Insert the end of the tube into the valve opening, making sure it is pushed completely in. There is a notch on the end that must line up correctly with the valve.
  2. Turn the tube clockwise to lock it into place.
  3. Position the tubing flat against the refrigerator surface and tape it down to hold it securely.
  4. Reconnect the water inlet line to the valve by pressing it in fully and hand-tightening the nut. Use the open-ended wrench to finish tightening, taking care not to over-tighten.
  5. The bracket removed earlier now gets reattached. Open both sides of it and slide it down over the new tubing.
  6. Clip the top back over the locking collar on the water line.
  7. Screw the water valve back to the refrigerator body using the quarter-inch screws and nut driver.

Step 3: Finishing touches

With the new ice maker fill tube assembly fully installed, replacement is complete. A few final steps will get your refrigerator back up and running:

  1. Turn the water supply back on and check carefully for leaks.
  2. Plug the power cord back in.
  3. Give the ice maker some time to begin cycles again and produce new ice.
  4. Be sure to test it out and confirm normal operation.
