Do I Need To Replace My Dryer Belt?

Your dryer drum won’t turn if the belt is broken, so diagnosing a damaged belt is pretty easy. If you still aren’t sure whether the dryer belt is the root of your problem, take the top panel off of your dryer and have a look inside.

The dryer belt should run along the middle of the drum, rib-side down, and it should be a relatively tight fit. If the belt is missing from the top of the drum, it has likely snapped and fallen off. If it seems especially loose, it may have stretched out or slipped the pulleys. Check the belt for tearing, crumbling, or thin spots. If has any damage like this, it needs to be replaced.

Has your dryer belt slipped free from the pulleys but has no other obvious damage? There’s a good chance it’s stretched out and still needs to be replaced, but you can still potentially save yourself a bit of time and money by reinstalling the dryer belt on the pulleys (check out our tutorial video to see how that’s done) and testing the dryer out – that might be all you need to do to fix the issue, or at least buy you time until your new belt arrives.

Finding The Right Replacement Part

To track down a compatible replacement part, you need your appliance’s model number. While your appliance’s manual will have a partial number, the full model number is going to be on a sticker somewhere on the dryer’s body. Not sure where to look? Start by opening up the dryer door and looking along the bottom. You can also check on the back and sides of the appliance.

Finding a compatible OEM replacement part is as simple as typing in that model number at AppliancePartsPros.com. Not only can you easily check compatibility on our site, you can scope out helpful tips from other do-it-yourselfers like you. Order through us, and you’ll have your part in as little as two days!

How To Replace The Belt In A Samsung Dryer

With this guide, we’re specifically covering how to replace the dryer drum belt in certain Samsung dryers. All dryer belts are generally installed in roughly the same way, but while this guide can potentially help you out regardless of your dryer’s brand, it may still be worth it to check out our YouTube channel. We’ve got DIY repair guides for all the most popular appliance brands!

Tools for the job

To replace the drum belt in your Samsung dryer, you will need:

Before you begin…

For your safety, be sure to disconnect your dryer from power either at the wall outlet or via the circuit breaker before beginning any maintenance. Never complete work on an appliance that is still receiving power – even if the appliance is off, you could get a nasty, potentially fatal shock!

Replacing a Samsung dryer belt

You’ll be disassembling much of the appliance to reach the belt. Replacing it once you get there is a pretty quick and easy process, though. If you’ve never tackled dryer disassembly before, set aside at least an hour to complete this job.

  1. Remove the top panel. The dryer’s top panel is held in place by a few screws along the back of the appliance. Once those are out, slide the panel back slightly, then lift it up to remove it, and set it aside.
  2. Remove the control panel. It’s held in place by a few locking tabs along the back. Carefully lift up on the control panel to dislodge these locking tabs, taking care not to pull too hard and break any of them. Once the panel is released, the wire harness still attached to it can be disconnected and the panel set aside.
  3. Remove the front panel. To do that, follow these steps:
    1. Open the dryer door, there should be two screws at the bottom of the panel that will need to be removed. Once the screws are out, close the dryer door.
    2. Remove the four screws along the top of the front panel, where the control panel used to be.
    3. With all the screws out, the panel can be removed. If it doesn’t come away easily, open the dryer door and lift the front panel slightly while pulling it away from the dryer body. This will free it from the locking tabs still holding it in place.
    4. Disconnect the dryer door switch to free up the panel completely. Lift the panel off of the mounting brackets at the bottom and set it aside.
  4. Remove the control panel support bracket. This is the metal panel that the control panel was mounted to. It’s held in place by six screws – three on either side – that can be removed with your Phillips screwdriver. Disconnect any wire harness clipped to the panel, then remove it and set it aside.
  5. Move the bundle of wires aside. Just drape it over the side of the appliance.
  6. Remove the bulkhead. The bulkhead is held in place by a number of screws along the front of the dryer, including one on the blower assembly. Be sure to also disconnect the moisture sensor’s wire harness.
  7. Release the tension on the old belt and remove it from the pulleys. If your belt is snapped, stretched out, or otherwise badly damaged, this step may be as easy as reaching in and removing the old belt.
    1. This is done most easily while sitting on the floor in front of your disassembled dryer. Reach in under the drum. You’ll likely need both hands for this, so put a hand in on each side of the drum.
    2. Grab the idler pulley and pull it toward the outside of the drier. This will slacken the tension on the old belt, allowing you to remove it from both pulleys.
    3. Time to stand up! Lift up on the drum slightly and guide the old belt out of the machine.
  8. Slide the new belt around the drum. Make sure that the belt doesn’t have any twists in it, then carefully slide it over the drum. You’ll need to lift the drum up again to slide the belt up all the way.
    1. The belt should be on the middle of the drum – there’s likely a divot where the belt should rest – and the ribs should be facing the drum.
  9. Route the new dryer belt through the pulleys. This is most easily done while sitting on the ground in front of your dryer.
    1. Reach both hands in around the drum and pull the idler pulley up.
    2. While holding the idler pulley up, loop the new belt around the motor pulley.
    3. Slowly lower the idler pulley, making sure the belt is sitting properly on the idler pulley before releasing both entirely.
  10. Reinstall the bulkhead. At this point, you’ve successfully installed a new belt! Time to start reassembly.
    1. Seat the bulkhead’s tabs on one side. Before pressing the other side into place, you may need to lift the dryer drum to ensure it will mount properly on the bulkhead’s rollers.
    2. Once the drum is properly in place, seat the other side’s tabs into the dryer frame.
    3. Reinstall the five screws you removed earlier to ensure the bulkhead is secure.
  11. Reconnect the moisture sensor wire harness. It should click when it’s locked in place.
  12. Reattach the upper wire bundle to the clips it was threaded through on the bulkhead, then reconnect the light’s harness. The door switch should be hanging down in the middle of the front panel, and for the time being the control panel wire harness will be unattached.
  13. Reinstall the control panel support bracket. Route the wire harness through the clips on this panel before completely seating the bracket. Once the wires are properly clipped, press the bracket’s locking tabs into place and then reinstall the mounting screws.
  14. Reinstall the front panel. Start by setting it onto the brackets at the bottom of the dryer. Then reconnect the door switch wire harness before pushing the panel into place. Once the front panel is properly seated on all tabs, the screws across the top and inside of the door can be reinstalled.
  15. Put the control panel back on. First, reconnect the wire harness for the control panel, then seat the panel into all locking tabs and press down to lock the panel in place.
  16. Reinstall the dryer top. To do this, set the top on the frame about an inch or two back, then press it forward. Take care when doing this to ensure that the top is properly catching the bracket that holds it in place. Once seated and pushed all the way forward, you can reinstall the screws along the back of the dryer.

Wrapping Up

With the top back on, you can plug your dryer back in and take it for a spin! It’s a good idea to do a test run without any laundry in the drum to help you determine if you’ve installed the new belt successfully. Make sure the drum turns and there aren’t any unusual noises coming from your appliance. If it all checks out, you’re good to get back to your usual laundry day!
