Check part compatibility

Before you replace the compressor start relay, make sure you have an OEM part that’s compatible with your specific refrigerator model. To do this, you’ll need to find the appliance model number.

The model number will say MOD or Model before the numbers and is typically found on a sticker or a metal plate in one of the following locations:

  • Inside the refrigerator, either on the side wall or the ceiling
  • On the back of the refrigerator, near the bottom
  • On the side or bottom of the refrigerator door

Once you’ve found the model number, write it down or take a clear photo of it for reference.

Safety precautions

When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by eliminating any risk of electric shock.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Turn off the water supply at the outlet before beginning repairs. Keep towels ready to catch any residual water in the system when removing parts.
  • Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Always take photos or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting them to make reassembly easier.

How to change out the compressor start relay

Follow these steps to replace the compressor start relay in your LG refrigerator.

  1. Unplug the refrigerator from the power outlet and disconnect it from the water supply.
  2. Place a towel under the water inlet hose to prepare for any remaining water that comes out.
  3. Use a 1/2-inch open-end wrench to unscrew the water inlet hose from the rear access panel. Set the water inlet hose aside.
  4. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws that hold the rear access panel in place.
  5. Lift the panel to disengage the tabs at the bottom, then remove the panel.
  6. Find the cover box in the left corner at the back of the refrigerator. This is where the compressor and start relay are located.
  7. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the single screw holding the cover box.
  8. Use a flathead screwdriver to carefully pry the cover out and remove it. The cover has two tabs at the bottom and latches on the top with another tab.
  9. To remove the old start relay, insert a flathead screwdriver and carefully pry it out from the compressor terminals.
  10. Remove the terminals and wires from the start relay with the flathead screwdriver.
  11. Align the new relay with the compressor terminals. Make sure the flat part with the post and pin, which holds the overload protector, is correctly aligned and installed over the terminals.
  12. Install the new relay onto the compressor terminals and connect the wires.
  13. Slide the cover back in and make sure the cutout at the bottom allows the harness to go through.
  14. Secure the cover box by tightening the single Phillips screw.
  15. Reinstall the rear access panel by aligning the two clips with the tabs and then securing it with the Phillips screws.
  16. Reconnect the water inlet hose to the refrigerator. Start by manually tightening it and then use the 1/2-inch open-end wrench to tighten it. Don’t overtighten it.
  17. Plug the refrigerator back into the power outlet and reconnect it to the water supply.
