Struggling with a stubborn dishwasher rack that just won’t glide smoothly? You’re not alone! Over time, upper rack wheels often wear out or break, leaving dishes unclean and causing frustration. Luckily, a simple fix is in sight—watch our concise how-to video below to learn how you can effortlessly replace your dishwasher’s upper rack wheel assembly and bring back the ease in your kitchen routine.

If you have a pre-owned or older dishwasher in your kitchen, you may notice some difficulty sliding the racks in and out or dishes that are still unclean after a cycle.

Over time, the wheels and rollers on the upper rack of a dishwasher can wear out or break, preventing the rack from sliding smoothly. When this happens, dishes don’t get fully clean since the rack can’t be positioned correctly.

If you need to replace a broken upper dish rack wheel assembly, you’ll be glad to know that it’s an easy fix you can do yourself in just a few minutes.

Let’s walk through how to remove and replace a faulty wheel assembly on the upper rack of a dishwasher.

What you need

  • Flat blade screwdriver – to detach and reattach the dish rack stoppers and release the locking tab on the old wheel assembly. Choose a screwdriver with a thin, sturdy tip that fits well into the release tabs.
  • Gloves (optional) –  to protect your hands from sharp edges as you handle any metal parts.
  • Replacement wheel assembly – so you can install the new wheel assembly once the old one is removed.
  • Towel or small container near the dishwasher to contain any removed parts.

Safety precautions

When working on any appliance, please take the proper safety measures to keep yourself and those around you safe. Follow these guidelines when performing tests and repairs on your Whirlpool dishwasher:

  • Turn off the power supply by unplugging the dishwasher or turning off the circuit breaker before starting any repairs to protect yourself from electric shock.
  • If the dishwasher tub or heating element is hot after you’ve used it, give it time to cool down before you attempt to replace a rack.
  • Wear protective gloves if you’re handling any metal parts with sharp edges.

Replacement steps

  1. Open the door of your dishwasher so you have access to the racks inside.
  2. Slide the upper rack out completely and be careful to not put too much weight on it. Pull it out gently until it stops.
  3. Find the two dish rack stoppers – there should be one on each side of the upper rack to prevent the rack from detaching when it’s pulled out.
  4. Use a flat-blade screwdriver to press in on the tab of the right stopper and push up to detach it. Remove the stopper.
  5. Repeat step 4 on the left stopper – press the screwdriver into the tab, then push up and remove the stopper.
  6. With both stoppers detached, slowly pull out the upper rack and carefully place it on the counter. Placing it upside down may give you better access to the wheels.
  7. Examine the 4 wheel assemblies on the underside of the rack. Find the damaged one that’s not rolling properly.
  8. To detach the wheel assembly, use a screwdriver to press down on its locking tab.
  9. While you keep the tab pressed, slide the entire wheel housing down and off the rack mounts. Remove and discard the old wheel housing.
  10. Grab the new replacement wheel assembly and orient it correctly so it matches the opening.
  11. Slide the replacement part up into the rack mounts while keeping the locking tab pressed down.
  12. Release the tab once the new wheel assembly is fully inserted so the wheel assembly is locked in place. Make sure the wheel assembly rolls freely.
  13. Pick up the rack, turn it over and line up the rollers with the guides of the upper rails inside.
  14. Slowly slide the rack back into the dishwasher, making sure that all 4 wheels enter the rail guides straight.
  15. Once the rack is halfway in, align and insert the second set of rack rollers into the rear rail guides.
  16. Push the rack fully inward until the back rollers are also fully seated inside the rail channels.
  17. Take the right stopper and orient the two locking tabs to the openings on the rack side.
  18. Press the stopper downwards to snap and lock the tabs into their cutouts on both sides.
  19. Repeat step 18 to install the left stopper by aligning it and pressing down to lock it in place.
  20. Push in the rack completely.
  21. Close the dishwasher door.
  22. Restore power to the dishwasher and run a cycle.
