Watch our step-by-step video guide below and learn how to keep your freezer efficient and your wallet happy.

Welcome to this guide on repairing a freezer door gasket in a GE refrigerator. The door gasket, also known as a door seal, prevents cold air from escaping and warm air from entering the freezer compartment. Over time, the gasket may wear out, become damaged, or lose its sealing ability, leading to energy loss and temperature problems inside the freezer. Replacing the gasket makes sure that the door can stay firmly closed.

Tools needed

To successfully replace the freezer door gasket in a GE refrigerator, you will need the following tools:

  • Flat-blade screwdriver: This tool is needed for removing the old gasket from the freezer door. The flat blade allows you to insert it into the groove and peel the gasket away. Choose a screwdriver with an appropriate size and shape to fit securely in the groove without damaging the door or gasket.
  • Soap and warm water: To clean the groove before installing the new gasket. This helps remove any dirt or residue that may have accumulated in the groove over time.
  • Blow dryer or heat gun (Optional): If the new gasket appears slightly wavy or doesn’t seal properly, you can use a blow dryer or heat gun to warm up the gasket. This makes it more pliable and easier to adjust. However, be cautious not to overheat or melt the gasket and door liner.

Safety precautions

When making any repairs on your refrigerator, including the freezer door gasket, you’ll need to prioritize safety. Here are some general safety precautions to keep in mind:

  • Before starting any work, unplug the refrigerator from the power source and turn off the circuit breaker that supplies electricity to the appliance to prevent the risk of electric shock during the repair process.
  • Wear protective gear such as gloves and safety glasses when working on your refrigerator. Gloves can protect your hands from sharp edges, pinching and other potential injuries, while safety glasses can shield your eyes from debris.

Pro Tip

Before installing the new gasket, try soaking it in a warm water bath for a few minutes. This allows the rubber material to become more pliable, helping to remove any grooves, folds or wrinkles in the gasket. The heat enables the gasket to set into a smooth shape that fits the door opening better. Afterward, take the gasket out and let it air dry completely. Installing the gasket while still wet can lead to issues. Allowing it to dry fully helps the gasket maintain the desired form once mounted into place. This pre-installation soak and dry technique helps the replacement gasket seal tightly for optimal cold retention when the repair is complete.

Installation steps

Once you have gathered the necessary tools and taken safety precautions, you are ready to install the new freezer door gasket. Carefully follow these step-by-step instructions to remove the old gasket and properly seal the new one in place:

  1. Open the freezer door and locate the existing gasket. Start peeling it slightly using your fingers to expose the groove.
  2. Insert the flat-blade screwdriver into the groove of the gasket and carefully start peeling it away from the door.
  3. Slowly and manually pull the gasket out from the groove until it is completely removed.
  4. If there is any dirt or residue in the groove after removing the old gasket, clean it using warm water and soap. Make sure to dry it thoroughly before installing the new gasket.
  5. Find the edge that goes all around the perimeter of the gasket.
  6. Start with one of the corners and press the edge of the gasket into the groove using your thumbs. Continue along the corners, pressing the gasket into the groove.
  7. Install the gasket along the top and bottom sides, so that the edge is securely pushed into the groove.
  8. Complete the installation of the gasket by pressing the edge into the groove along the sides.
  9. Close the freezer door and verify that the magnet strip on the gasket is touching the cabinet.
  10. If the gasket appears slightly wavy or not sealing properly, run your fingers along the inside of the gasket, pushing the front strip portion towards the cabinet.
  11. If needed, you can use a blow dryer or heat gun on a low setting to warm up the gasket slightly, being careful not to melt it.
  12. After heating, repeat the process of pushing the gasket towards the cabinet.
  13. Check that all sides of the gasket are aligned and create a tight seal with the cabinet. Adjust as needed.
  14. Once you are satisfied with the installation, plug the refrigerator back in and check that it is cooling properly.
