Safety precautions

When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by eliminating any risk of electric shock.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Turn off the water supply at the outlet before beginning repairs. Keep towels ready to catch any residual water in the system when removing parts.
  • Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Always take photos or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting them to make reassembly easier.

How to replace the power cord

Follow these steps to change out a faulty power cord on your Frigidaire refrigerator.

Step 1: Remove the rear access panel

  1. Unplug the refrigerator from the power outlet and shut off the water supply.
  2. Follow the power cord to the rear access panel.
  3. Use the 1/4-inch nut driver to remove the four screws holding the access panel in place.
  4. Carefully pull off the panel and set it aside.
  5. Lay down a towel beneath the water valve to catch any drips.

Step 2: Disconnect the water supply line

  1. Use the 1/2-inch open-end wrench to loosen and disconnect the water supply line from the refrigerator. Some water may spill out, but the towel should catch it.
  2. Remove the tube and set it aside.

Step 3: Remove the screw holding the power cord

Find the screw near the water line that secures a bracket and ground wire to the power cord. Remove this screw using your nut driver, then take the bracket off.

Step 4: Disconnect the plug

  1. Find the large white electrical plug that’s attached to the old power cord.
  2. Insert the flat screwdriver into the notch on the plug to release the tab that locks it together.
  3. Pull apart the two halves of the plug.

Step 5: Cut the ground wires

  1. You’ll see two green ground wires leading from the old power cord to the compressor.
  2. Use the side cutters to clip these wires to free the old cord.

Step 6: Remove the mounting bracket

  1. Use the flat screwdriver to pry open the mounting bracket that’s attached to the old power cord.
  2. Slide the mounting bracket off the old cord and set it aside.

Step 7: Install the bracket on the new cord

  1. Install the metal mounting bracket on the new power cord, about 1.5 inches from the green ground wire.
  2. Push the mounting bracket on firmly and squeeze it so it’s snug.

Step 8: Connect the new power cord

  1. Orient the new power cord and make sure the white plug is connected correctly.
  2. Press the cord on until it clicks into place.

Step 9: Reinstall the mounting bracket

  1. Insert the bracket screw through the bracket and green ground wires.
  2. Position the bracket screw in the opening on the wall.
  3. While holding it flush, tighten down the screw until it’s secure.

Step 10: Reattach the rear panel

  1. Carefully reposition the rear access panel.
  2. Insert and tighten all four 1/4-inch screws with your nut driver.

Step 11: Reconnect the water line

  1. Attach the water supply line back to the refrigerator’s water valve.
  2. Turn the fitting by hand until it’s snug.
  3. Use the wrench to tighten the connection.

Step 12: Test the refrigerator

  1. Plug the fridge back in and turn on the water supply.
  2. Check for any leaks once the refrigerator starts up again.
