Symptoms of a faulty lid lock wiring harness

The lid lock wiring harness maintains the secure connection and transmission of electrical signals from the control board to the lid lock, which prevents the lid from being opened while the washer is running. Inside the washing machine’s cabinet, the harness connects the locking mechanism to the control board.

Your washer might have a bad lid lock wiring harness if:

  • The lid lock isn’t engaging or disengaging properly
  • The washer isn’t starting
  • The washer is stopping mid-cycle
  • An error code related to the lid lock is showing on the display
  • There’s visible damage or wear on the wiring
  • There’s an unusual burning smell or other signs of electrical shorting

What you’ll need

  • 1/4-inch nut driver
  • Putty knife
  • Pliers
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • New lid lock wiring harness (make sure it’s compatible with your specific model before installing)

How to replace the lid lock wiring harness

Follow these steps to replace the lid lock wiring harness in your GE washer without an expensive service call.

Step 1: Remove the rear access panel

You’ll need to remove the rear access panel so you can get to the control board and wiring.

  1. Unplug the washing machine from the power source to keep yourself safe from electric shocks.
  2. Find the four 1/4-inch screws along the rear access panel. Use a 1/4-inch nut driver to remove all four screws and set them aside in a safe place.
  3. Gently pull the access panel directly away from the machine. The panel is held on by two clips at the top that will release as you pull.
  4. Carefully disconnect the wire harness plug on the back of the access panel. Use a small flat screwdriver to depress the clip and release the plug.
  5. Use a flathead screwdriver to remove the ground wire from the access panel.
  6. Set the rear access panel aside.

Step 2: Detach the control panel

With the rear panel removed, you’ll need to detach the control panel so you can access and remove the lid lock wiring harness.

  1. Use the 1/4-inch nut driver to remove the two 1/4-inch screws at the bottom corners of the control panel.
  2. Pull the bottom of the control panel forward to release the hinges, then pivot it up and lay it on the top of the washer.
  3. Remove the upper 1/4-inch screw along the back top edge of the control panel. Slide the capacitor down if needed to access this screw.
  4. Disconnect the lid lock wire harness plug from the control board.

Step 3: Remove the old lid lock wiring harness

  1. Carefully lift the top of the washer lid.
  2. Insert a putty knife into the seam near the corner and gently pry up to release the lid from the top frame. Repeat this on the other side.
  3. Tilt the lid forward and up to fully detach it. Set it aside.
  4. Grasp the lid lock wiring harness near the lid lock assembly and unplug it from the connector.
  5. Use pliers or a putty knife to remove the plastic retainer clips that hold the harness.
  6. Unplug the harness from the lid lock connector on top of the washer.
  7. Pull the old lid lock wiring harness free from the washer.

  2. Run the harness through the clips along the top frame and secure it back in place with the plastic retainers.
  3. Plug the connector on the other end of the harness into the lid lock assembly on the front of the machine.
  4. Carefully tilt the top lid back into place by aligning the edges.
  5. Press down firmly so the clips engage.
  6. Attach the wiring harness plug to the control board. Make sure the connection is secure.
  7. Reposition the control panel by attaching the screws and connectors. Make sure no wires are pinched.
  8. Replace the rear access panel by sliding it into place and replacing the four screws.

You’re almost done! Just a few more steps to button it up:

  1. Turn the water supply back on.
  2. Plug the washer’s power cord back in.
