Safety precautions

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before attempting any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of injury from electric shock.
  • Turn off the water supply at the outlet before beginning repairs to any appliance parts that hold water. Have towels ready for any residual water in the system when removing parts.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts, pinching hazards and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Take your time and don’t rush while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access the interior parts.
  • Clear your workspace of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with bare wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check your user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions for your part or appliance.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause injury.
  • Wear safety glasses when working with chemicals, dust or cleaning large debris to prevent injury.

Replacement steps

Disassembly

  1. Start by removing the ice dispenser. It is held in place by locking tabs around the edges. To release the tabs, use a putty knife. Begin at the bottom and carefully work your way up the sides, ensuring not to scratch anything.
  2. Once all the tabs are released, carefully set the dispenser down at the bottom to gain access to the parts.
  3. To prevent the wires from bearing the weight, use tape that doesn’t leave residue to tape the assembly up.
  4. Locate the ice dispenser door link at the top of the cavity.
  5. Use a phillips screwdriver to remove the screws holding a small retainer bar in place.
  6. Lift up and remove the retainer bar.
  7. Pull out the pin and slide it down to access the door link.
  8. Remove the lever to reach in with the screwdriver and remove the screws that hold the link in place.
  9. Once the screws are removed, you can pull the old door link off the refrigerator.

Installation

  1. Take the new door link and align it against the motor pin with the flat part at the bottom.
  2. Place a screw through the top of the link and grab it with needle-nose pliers.
  3. Move the lever back into position.
  4. Secure the link in place by tightening the screw with a phillips screwdriver.
  5. For the lower screw, move the lever out of the way to access the screw hole and screw it in.
  6. After tightening the lower screw, lift the lever back into place.
  7. Reinsert the pin into its slot.
  8. Place the bracket and screws back in, ensuring that the locking tab goes through the bracket.
  9. If the springs have fallen out, place them in the designated slots.
  10. To reassemble the dispenser, remove the tape that was used to hold the assembly up.
  11. Lift the dispenser up, align it properly, and snap it back into place.
  12. Make sure that everything is securely in place before plugging the refrigerator back in.
