Is your LG fridge door not closing properly, leaving your food at risk of spoilage? The issue might be a worn-out lower door hinge, an essential component that ensures a snug seal every time you close the door. Discover how you can easily replace this hinge yourself and save your groceries with our step-by-step guide, complete with a detailed how-to video just below.

The lower door hinge on your LG fridge allows the door to open and close properly. This spring-loaded hinge is located at the bottom of the left fresh food door. Over time, the hinge can wear out or break, which can prevent the door from sealing tightly.

You can find a replacement lower door hinge here. If you need other replacement parts for your LG fridge, just enter your model number at AppliancePartsPros.com to find them. It’s that easy! Most orders arrive in just two business days, and we have thousands of guides to show you how to install your new parts.

What you’ll need

  • Phillips and flat-blade screwdrivers
  • New lower refrigerator door hinge AEH36821908 (make sure it’s compatible with your fridge model)

Keep safety first

Your safety should always be the top priority when performing any appliance repair.

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of electric shock.
  • Turn off the water supply at the outlet before beginning repairs. Keep towels ready to catch any residual water in the system when removing parts.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Consider wearing safety glasses and/or a dust mask when working with chemicals, dust or a large amount of debris to prevent irritation or injury.

Replacement instructions

Step 1 – Remove the back cover

  1. Make sure the fridge is turned off and unplugged.
  2. Find the removable panel on the rear of the fridge that covers the water line and electrical parts. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the two screws holding it in place.
  3. Set the cover aside.

Step 2 – Disconnect the water line & remove the top hinge cover

  1. Find the coiled water tubing that runs from the back of the fridge to the water dispenser.
  2. Depress the release collar on the line coupling and gently pull the tubing free. Use towels to catch any drips.
  3. Find the left fresh food door that has a hinge cover panel. Remove the single Phillips screw and pry off the decorative cover.

Step 3 – Disconnect the door wiring & open the hinge lever

  1. Two wire harness plugs connect the door to the refrigerator’s main wiring. Depress the locking tabs and detach both plugs.
  2. Use a flat-head screwdriver to pry open the hinge lever bracket on the top door hinge.

Step 4 – Remove the grounding screw & pry off the top hinge

  1. Take out the grounding screw that holds the two green wires to the top hinge. Set the screw aside.
  2. Insert a flathead screwdriver into the seam around the top hinge cover.
  3. Gently pry the panel up and off to release the hinge.

Step 5 – Remove the ice bin and lift off the door

  1. Open the left door and take out the ice bucket. This makes the door lighter and easier to maneuver. The ice bucket can be placed in the freezer to preserve the ice.
  2. With the top hinge loosened, carefully lift the door up and off the bottom hinge pin.
  3. Set the door aside.

Step 6 – Remove the door stop & the old lower hinge

  1. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the three screws holding the black door stop bracket and the lower hinge at the base of the door.
  2. Take off the door stoppiece.
  3. Since there aren’t any more screws securing the old lower hinge, you can use a flathead screwdriver to pry it loose from the slot.
  4. Pull the hinge free from the door bottom.

Step 7 – Install the new lower hinge

  1. Line up the new lower hinge and insert it into the slot on the door base.
  2. Press firmly to snap it into position.

  2. Lift the refrigerator door and lower it onto the center hinge pin. Make sure the door sits correctly on the new lower hinge.
  3. Lift the top hinge and fit the inner tabs into the slots on the door’s left side.
  4. Swing the hinge over to clip back onto the fridge.
  5. Replace the grounding screw that secures the two green wires to the metal hinge housing.
  6. Route the water tubing back through the opening at the top of the door hinge. Pull it through gently until the end appears at the back.
  7. Plug both wire harness connectors back into the openings on the left door hinge side. Listen for a click as they lock into place.
  8. Press the decorative top hinge cover back on.
  9. Reinsert and tighten the single Phillips screw.
  10. Turn the refrigerator’s water supply back on at the shut-off valve.
  11. Slide the water tubing back into the coupling until it clicks.
  12. Put the rear protective cover back on.
  13. Replace the two Phillips screws along the top edge.
  14. Restore power to the refrigerator and turn the water supply back on. Put the ice bin back in the door if it was removed earlier.
