Tools and materials needed

To take on this refrigerator repair, you will need:

Safety first

When working on any appliance, always keep safety first to avoid personal injury or damage to the appliance or parts. Here are some safety tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of electric shock.
  • Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.

Replacement Steps

  1. Identify whether the issue is with the freezer light or the fresh food section light.
  2. Open the door to the affected compartment; the light module should be mounted on the ceiling.
  3. Insert the putty knife between the light module and the ceiling of the compartment.
  4. Press inward to disengage the clips.
  5. There are four clips total—two on each side.
  6. Press and gently pull down on one side.
  7. Repeat the process on the other side.
  8. Carefully lower the module.
  9. Disconnect the wire plugs.
  10. There are three wire connectors.
  11. Press the release tab on each plug and pull it out.
  12. Remove the old LED light module.
  13. Position the new module correctly.
  14. The rear two clips are spaced farther apart than the front two.
  15. Reconnect the three wire plugs.
  16. Each plug is a different size, so they can only be connected one way.
  17. Ensure all plugs are secure.
  18. Align the module clips with the ceiling slots.
  19. Push the module up while pressing inward so it snaps firmly into place.
  20. Close the refrigerator or freezer door.
  21. Plug the appliance back in or switch the circuit breaker back on.
  22. Open the door to test that the light module activates properly.
