What is the magnetic door plunger & why is it important?
When the washer isn’t in use, the magnetic door plunger holds the door slightly open so the door and tub seal can dry. It’s at the bottom of the washer’s door and allows for air circulation within the washer’s drum and prevents moisture buildup from wash cycles. This ventilation keeps the door seal from retaining water and also helps stop mold and mildew from forming.
Over time, the tabs on the sides of the plunger may break or become damaged, which can cause the plunger to lose its ability to stay in place. When this happens, the door may not close properly. If there’s a gap, water could leak from the washer and mold or mildew can grow inside the door.

Check part compatibility
Before you replace the magnetic door plunger, make sure you have an OEM part that’s compatible with your specific washer model. To do this, you’ll need to find the appliance model number.
The model number will say MOD or Model before the numbers and is typically found on a sticker or a metal plate in one of the following locations:
- Inside the door on the frame
- On the control panel top or side
- On the cabinet at the bottom or side
Once you’ve found the model number, write it down or take a clear photo of it for reference.

Safety tips
When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
- Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by eliminating any risk of electric shock.
- Turn off the water supply at the outlet before beginning repairs. Keep towels ready to catch any residual water in the system when removing parts.
- If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
- Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
- Work in a well-lit area so you can see and access appliance parts.
- Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
- Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
- Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
- Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
- Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
- When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
- Always take photos or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting them to make reassembly easier.
How to replace the magnetic door plunger
Follow these steps to change out the door plunger on your LG washer.
- Make sure the washer is unplugged from the power outlet and disconnected from the water supply.
- To remove the old part, create a tool by straightening a paperclip except for the last elbow bend. Then use a hammer to flatten the paperclip. If you have a mini flathead screwdriver, you can use that instead.
- Open the washer door. Press the door plunger slightly to gain some clearance.
- Position the flat tool (altered paperclip or screwdriver) on top of the plunger, right at the 12 o’clock position so that the tool is aligned against the tab on the plunger.
- Apply downward pressure on the tool and press against the tab on the plunger. This should release the magnetic door plunger from the door. There’s a tab on the top and bottom of the plunger, and pressing either one will release it.
- Take the new spring and insert it into the plunger. Make sure to position the tapered end of the spring inward. The magnet in the plunger should hold the spring in place.
- Position the plunger back into the washer’s door opening. Align the tabs on the plunger at the 6 o’clock and 12 o’clock positions. Make sure the tabs on the plunger are locked in place.
- See if the door now closes properly and stays open with the magnetic plunger.
- Plug the washer back into the power outlet and turn on the water supply.
