What is This Part?

The compressor overload protector assembly is located on the side of the compressor. It includes the cover box, the overload protector, the start relay, and the wiring harness. The main job of the overload protector is to protect the compressor from potential damage by cutting off the power supply if it gets too hot. The relay is important for getting the compressor up and running.

Tools and Materials

Safety First

Your safety should always be the top priority when performing any appliance repair.

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of electric shock.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Don’t test live voltage with a multimeter if you’re unfamiliar with how to prevent short-circuiting.
  • Consider wearing safety glasses and/or a dust mask when working with chemicals, dust or a large amount of debris to prevent irritation or injury.

Replacement Steps

Remove the Rear Access Panel

  1. Locate the access panel at the lower rear of the refrigerator.
  2. Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the screws securing the panel.
  3. Carefully lift the panel off and set it aside, along with the screws.

Remove the Compressor Cover Box

  1. Locate the cover box mounted on the side of the compressor.
  2. Using a flat-blade screwdriver, gently pry the cover box off. Do this slowly to avoid damaging any clips or nearby components.

Remove the Relay and Wiring

  1. Carefully use the flat-blade screwdriver to pry the start relay off the compressor terminals. Work slowly and cautiously to avoid damaging the terminals.
  2. Locate the wiring harness plug attached to the assembly. Press the locking tab on the side of the plug and disconnect it from the compressor.

Prepare the New Assembly

The replacement part may come with a different style of cover box. Follow the appropriate instructions based on what you have:

If the new assembly matches your current compressor cover box, you can directly replace the entire old assembly with the new one.

If the cover boxes are different:

  1. Open both the new and old cover boxes.
  2. Remove the internal components (relay and overload protector) from both.
  3. Install the new relay and overload protector into your original cover box so it will fit properly.

Install the Overload Protector and Relay

  1. Insert the new overload protector into the designated slot inside the cover box and press it firmly into place.
  2. Align the relay’s pins with the compressor terminal holes and push it on until it is fully seated.

Connect the Ground Wires

The new assembly includes two green ground wires.

  1. If your refrigerator already has a ground wire running from the compressor to the chassis, use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the ground screw.
  2. Combine the existing ground wire with the two new ones and secure all three under the screw. Tighten securely.
  3. If there is no existing ground wire attach one green wire to the compressor frame. Attach the second green wire to the chassis ground screw.

Reconnect the Wiring and Close the Cover Box

  1. Plug the wire harness into the connector on the new assembly.
  2. Reinstall the cover box over the relay and protector assembly.

Reinstall the Rear Access Panel

  1. Position the rear access panel back in place.
  2. Align the screw holes and reinsert the screws using the Phillips screwdriver.

Final Steps

Restore power by plugging the refrigerator back in or turning the circuit breaker back on. Listen for the compressor to start running. Confirm that the refrigerator begins to cool.
