What you’ll need
- 5/8″ open-ended wrench
- 5/16″ nut driver
- 1/4″ nut driver
- Phillips screwdriver
- Flathead screwdriver
Safety precautions
- Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before attempting any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of injury from electric shock.
- Don’t test wiring with a multimeter for live voltage if you’re unfamiliar with how to prevent short circuiting when testing.
- When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
- Take your time and don’t rush while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries.
- Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access the interior parts.
- Clear your workspace of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
- Never work on internal parts with bare wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
- Check your user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions for your part or appliance.
- Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause injury.
- Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts, pinching hazards and debris.
- Wear safety glasses when working with chemicals, dust or cleaning large debris to prevent injury.
Replacement steps
- Place a towel on the floor near the dishwasher to catch any water that may spill during the repair.
- disconnect the water supply line under the sink. The fill line is connected to the hot water valve. Turn off the water valve, then use a 5/8 inch wrench to loosen and remove the fill line.
- Disconnect the drain hose. Follow the hose to its endpoint, which may be the garbage disposal or an air gap. Use a 5/16 nut driver to loosen the clamp securing the drain hose, and then remove the hose.
- Open the dishwasher door. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws that hold the dishwasher mounting brackets to the countertop.
- Once the screws are removed, lift up on the door and use it to carefully pull the dishwasher out partially. Grab the frame and continue pulling the dishwasher out until it is completely accessible.
- With the dishwasher pulled out, you will have access to the door cables. There is one on each side, and it is recommended to replace both of them since the kit usually includes both cables for even wearing.
- Locate the door spring retainer. Use a small flathead screwdriver to pry and release the locking tab at the base, then flex it to remove the retainer.
- Use the small flathead screwdriver again to reach into the opening and pull out the door spring.
- Once the spring is removed, disconnect the door cable by rotating it and pushing it to release it from the spring. Remove the door cable from the guides.
- Lift the old door cable off the hinge and remove it from the dishwasher.
- Take the new door cable and hook it onto the hinge. Route the cable through the guides.
- To attach the spring, put the door cable through the little cutout in the spring and turn it to lock it in place.
- Use the flathead screwdriver to stretch the spring and position it into the base.
- Once the spring is in place, push the spring retainer back in until it locks securely.
- Carefully push the dishwasher back into the cabinet. Ensure that the lines are not caught on anything by reaching under the sink and pulling on them.
- Once the dishwasher is in place, reconnect the drain hose. Push the hose into place and use the 5/16 inch nut driver to tighten the clamp securely.
- Reconnect the water supply line by screwing it in by hand and then using a 5/8 inch wrench to tighten it further to prevent leaks.
- Close the dishwasher door. Plug in the dishwasher and turn on the water supply.
Congratulations! You have successfully replaced the door cable on your Bosch dishwasher. Your dishwasher should now be ready for use again.
