What you’ll need

Safety First

Safety comes first when working on any appliance. Here are some practical tips to help keep you safe:

  • Always turn off the power by unplugging the appliance or switching off the circuit breaker before starting. This protects you from the risk of electric shock.
  • Wear insulated gloves to protect your hands from sharp edges, pinching hazards, or debris.
  • Take your time and work at a steady pace to avoid accidents or injuries.
  • Make sure your workspace is well-lit so you can clearly see and access the parts you’re working on.
  • Keep your area organized and free of clutter, and ensure children and pets are kept away from the workspace.
  • Never handle internal parts with wet hands. Make sure both your hands and the work area are completely dry.
  • Check your appliance’s user manual for specific instructions or safety guidelines related to your repair.
  • Handle parts gently to prevent damaging the appliance or injuring yourself by using too much force.
  • Wear safety glasses if you’re dealing with chemicals, dust, or large debris to protect your eyes.
  • If the appliance was recently used, give it time to cool down before working on any heated components.
  • Take photos or notes of wiring connections before disconnecting anything. This makes reassembly much easier.
  • Avoid touching exposed wires or terminals. If you need to handle wires, use non-conductive tools or wear insulated gloves to reduce the risk of electrical shock.

Removal Steps

Make sure both power and water are off before beginning any repairs.

  1. Locate screw holes: Examine the control panel cover on top of your unit and look for screw holes in the left, right, and possibly central areas. The cover may stretch fully across or have separated left/right panels.
  2. Remove screws: Using a Phillips head screwdriver, back out the screws. They should remain attached to the cover when loosened.
  3. Lift cover: Carefully lift up the left, right, or full-width control panel cover. Tilt it back toward the wall while lifting to avoid snagging wiring harnesses underneath.
  4. Take care when removing this panel. There may be multiple wire connectors and harnesses dangling underneath that you don’t want to damage.
  1. Locate switch: The door reed switch is labeled “switch” on the control cover. It’s a small black plastic piece tucked into a bracket.
  2. Disconnect wiring harness: Unplug the switch’s wiring harness by pressing down on the connector’s locking tab and gently removing it. You may need a small flathead screwdriver to release the catch.
  3. Extract switch: With the harness unplugged, use your fingers or flathead screwdriver to press in the plastic locking tabs on either side of the switch bracket. This allows you to slide it out.

Installation and Reassembly

  1. Position replacement: Line up your new Samsung door reed switch with its bracket channel inside the control panel cover. Make sure the foam backing rests flush against the ribbed panel surface.
  2. Snap into place: Press the replacement switch into the bracket channel until both plastic side locks click securely. The component should sit flush and even.
  3. Reconnect wiring: Plug the wiring harness back into your new door reed switch. Push firmly until the connector clicks and locks in place for a solid connection.
  4. Align cover: With all screws removed earlier, realign your refrigerator’s control panel cover. Make sure it sits flat and the edges match up.
  5. Replace screws: Insert any central screws first if your panel has them. Then work around the left and right perimeter, making sure the holes line up clearly.
  6. Test operation: With the cover screwed securely back in place, restore power to your Samsung fridge. Give doors a test open and close while listening/looking for proper light and dispenser operation.
