Safety precautions

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before attempting any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of injury from electric shock.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Take your time and don’t rush while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access the interior parts.
  • Clear your workspace of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with bare wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check your user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions for your part or appliance.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts, pinching hazards and debris.
  • Wear safety glasses when working with chemicals, dust or cleaning large debris to prevent injury.

Replacement steps

  1. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet or flip the circuit breaker switch to the “off” position to cut power to the fridge. This keeps you safe while you’re working.
  2. Open the freezer door to access the inside of the freezer compartment.
  3. The chiller shelf sits near the top of the freezer compartment. Remove this shelf by pressing down on the locking tabs on each side and lifting it out.
  4. Lift the front edge of the shelf up and outward to disengage it from the side rails. Pull the shelf completely out and set it aside.
  5. Lift up the ice bucket and pull it out. Set the ice bucket aside.
  6. Find the ice maker fill cup at the top of the ice maker, in the back. The fill cup has a post that extends up near the top wall of the freezer.
  7. Reach your hand into the small space behind the ice maker unit. Feel along the bottom of the fill cup post for the small plastic locking tab, then press down firmly on the tab to disengage it from the post.
  8. Gently wiggle and lift the old fill cup up and off of the ice maker unit. Be careful not to bump or displace the fill line that extends up into the freezer wall.
  9. Pull the old fill cup completely out of the freezer and discard it appropriately.
  10. Carefully align the new fill cup over the ice maker unit, then push down firmly so that the locking tab engages.
  11. Slide the ice bucket back in by lining it up with the rails.
  12. Put the chiller shelf back in by lining it up on the side rails and locking it into place.
  13. Close the freezer door.
  14. Reconnect power to the refrigerator or turn the circuit breaker back on.
  15. Allow the refrigerator to cool down and check for correct ice maker operation.
