Safety precautions

When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by eliminating any risk of electric shock.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • If you have a gas model, shut off the gas supply to prevent any leaks while you work.
  • Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Always take photos or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting them to make reassembly easier.

How to replace the vent switch

Follow these steps to change out a faulty vent switch on your Bosch or Thermador range.

Step 1: Disassemble the range

  1. Unplug the range from the power outlet to eliminate any chance of electrocution.
  2. If you have a gas model, shut off the gas supply to the range.
  3. Carefully lift and remove the grates from the range. Place them somewhere safe and out of the way.
  4. Lift the burner caps off and set them aside.
  5. Use your 13/16-inch socket wrench to turn the nuts counterclockwise.
  6. Lift the burner bases from their positions.
  7. Place a towel on the rear panel to protect it from scratching.
  8. Pull the cooktop forward to unlock it.
  9. Check the cooktop wires to make sure they’re long enough to allow you to move the cooktop.
  10. Lift the cooktop slowly and place it on the towel.
  11. Open the oven door to access the parts on the control panel.
  12. Use your Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws underneath the control panel. There are usually two screws on each side.
  13. Carefully pull off the burner knobs.
  14. Remove the glass cover from its position.

Step 2: Replace the vent switch

  1. Use your pliers to unscrew the nut holding the old vent switch in place.
  2. Once the nut is off, you can push the vent switch through and remove it.
  3. Connect the wires from the old vent switch to the new switch.
  4. Plug in the wires for the vent switch.
  5. Insert the new vent switch through the cutout designed for it.
  6. Secure the switch with the provided nut. Use your pliers to tighten it.

Step 3: Reassemble the range

  1. Carefully place the glass cover in its position.
  2. Reattach the burner knobs to their respective shafts.
  3. Slide the frame back and secure it with the screws you removed earlier.
  4. Lower the cooktop and slide it back into its original position.
  5. Make sure the pins on the burner bases are aligned correctly. One pin is closer to the edge and should be positioned toward the igniter.
  6. Insert the venturi tube into the middle of the bases and tighten the nuts with the 13/16-inch socket wrench.
  7. Place the burner caps back on their respective burners. Make sure they fit snugly over the burners.
  8. Put the grates back over the burners.
  9. Plug the range back into the power source. If you have a gas model, turn the gas supply back on.
  10. Test the switch by operating the vent. Make sure it goes up and down as expected.
