On a Whirlpool washer, the water level switch kit is responsible for sensing and controlling the amount of water in the tub, allowing your washer to fill to the appropriate level for the selected load size without overflowing or underfilling.

Common signs that indicate the need for replacement include the washer overfilling, not filling enough, or filling and draining simultaneously.

Fortunately, with a few basic tools and some patience, you can tackle this repair yourself and get your washer back in working order. So, let’s get started!

Safety precautions

When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before attempting any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of injury from electric shock.
  • Turn off the water supply at the outlet before beginning repairs to any appliance parts that hold water. Have towels ready for any residual water in the system when removing parts.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts, pinching hazards and debris.
  • Don’t test wiring with a multimeter for live voltage if you’re unfamiliar with how to prevent short circuiting when testing.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Take your time and don’t rush while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access the interior parts.
  • Clear your workspace of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with bare wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check your user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions for your part or appliance.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause injury.
  • Wear safety glasses when working with chemicals, dust or cleaning large debris to prevent injury.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time for any heating parts to cool down before working on it.
  • Take pictures or make a note of wiring connections before disconnecting to prevent any problems with reassembly.

Replacement steps

Step 1: Disassembly

  1. Locate the two screws at the back corners of the console. Use a Phillips screwdriver to loosen the screws by unscrewing them halfway.
  2. Pull the knob off the water level switch.
  3. Pull the console forward to disengage it from the cabinet at the bottom. Lift the console up.
  4. Use a flat blade screwdriver to lift the tab and disconnect the wire plug from the console.
  5. Using a flat blade screwdriver, pry out the two retainer clips located in the corners of the cabinet.
  6. Tilt the cabinet towards you and remove it from the base. Place it on the floor.
  7. Pull the clear plastic air tube from the outer tub port and release it from the retainers.
  8. Push in the locking tab on the side of the water level switch with a flat blade screwdriver and turn the switch counterclockwise to free it from the console.
  9. Lift the tab and disconnect the wire plug from the switch.
  10. Use a utility knife to shorten the new air hose to match the length of the old one.
  11. Use pliers to slide the clamp onto the air hose.

Step 2: Reassembly

  1. Connect the tube onto the new water level switch and secure the air hose with the clamp.
  2. Connect the wire plug to the new water level switch.
  3. Place the new water level switch into the cutout in the console. Turn it clockwise to lock it in place.
  4. Slide the air tube under the retainers and slide the end onto the outer tub port, ensuring it is fully inserted.
  5. Align the four mounting tabs at the base of the cabinet with the corresponding slots in the base. Make sure the tabs are straight; if not, use pliers to bend them vertically.
  6. Open the lid and bring the cabinet to the front of the washer.
  7. Slide the front edge of the cabinet under the base and lower it down so all four tabs go into the slots.
  8. Align the rear panel with the cabinet and hold it in place.
  9. Install the retainer clips on each side to secure the cabinet.
  10. Reconnect the wire plug to the console.
  11. Match the clips at the bottom of the console with the cutouts in the cavity.
  12. Install the knob on the water level switch.
  13. Secure the console using the two screws at the back corners.
  14. Plug the washer back in and turn the water back on.
  15. Test the washer to check for any problems.
