Is your fridge failing to keep your food cool and fresh? A faulty compressor start device could be the culprit, leaving your refrigerator struggling to start properly. Don’t worry—our step-by-step guide and accompanying how-to video below will walk you through the simple fix, saving you a costly service call!

Need a part?  Search below using your appliance model number to find exactly what you need:

The compressor start device – also known as a start relay or start capacitor – consists of a relay and an overload protector which work together to regulate and protect the compressor during the startup process. When the fridge is turned on, the start device briefly supplies an extra surge of electricity to help the compressor start running.

You can find a replacement start device here. If you need other replacement parts for your Whirlpool refrigerator, just enter your model number at AppliancePartsPros.com to find them. It’s that easy! Most orders arrive in just two business days, and we have thousands of guides to show you how to install your new parts.

What is the start device & why would it need to be replaced?

The compressor is the heart of a refrigerator’s cooling system. It pressurizes the refrigerant and keeps both fridge and freezer compartments at the right temperatures.

The start device is a small component attached to the side of the compressor. Its job is to momentarily boost power to the compressor motor to help it start up each time it cycles on. The start device also prevents the compressor from overheating by regulating its cycles.

You might have a bad start device if…

  • The fridge and freezer aren’t cooling, but the interior light still turns on when you open the door
  • You hear clicking sounds coming from the back of the fridge every few minutes as the compressor tries to start

What you’ll need

  • 1/4-inch nut driver
  • Flat blade screwdriver
  • New compressor start device (make sure it’s compatible with your specific model before installing)

Keep safety first

Your safety should always be the top priority when performing any appliance repair.

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of electric shock.
  • Turn off the water supply at the outlet before beginning repairs. Keep towels ready to catch any residual water in the system when removing parts.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Consider wearing safety glasses and/or a dust mask when working with chemicals, dust or a large amount of debris to prevent irritation or injury.

How to replace the start device

Follow these steps to switch out the faulty start device in your Whirlpool refrigerator.

Step 1: Remove the access panel

The start device can be found on the back of the refrigerator compressor. To get to it, you’ll  need to detach the rear access panel:

  1. Unplug the fridge from the power outlet.
  2. Disconnect the water supply to the fridge.
  3. Use the 1/4-inch nut driver to remove all the screws holding the rear access panel in place. There are typically 6-8 screws to remove.
  4. Tilt the panel slightly outward and slide the power cord out from its slot.
  5. Pull the panel free and set it aside. Be careful not to stress any of the wiring/tubing connections.

You should now be able to see the compressor and access the start device.

Step 2: Remove the old start device

  1. Find the old start device mounted to the side of the compressor. It has a small electrical plug and wiring connected to it.
  2. Insert the flat screwdriver blade into the seam around the start device to gently pry and loosen it. Apply even pressure as you go around the perimeter.
  3. Once it’s detached, pull the start device outward as far as the wires allow. This will give you enough slack to disconnect the plugs.
  4. Use the screwdriver to release the locking tab on the plug and separate it from the start device.
  5. Detach the run capacitor that’s wired to the old start device since you’ll need to transfer this over to the new one.

Step 3: Install the new start device

  1. Take the new start device out of its packaging.
  2. Attach the run capacitor from the old start device to the new one. The plastic locking pin should slide into place. Press firmly to lock it in.
  3. Plug in the electrical connector to the new start device. It only fits one way. You’ll hear a click when it’s locked in.
  4. Position the start device against the three pins on the side of the compressor. Line up the mounting holes.
  5. Push the new start device onto the pins until it snaps into place.

Step 4: Replace the access panel

  1. Hold the access panel up to the refrigerator chassis. Feed any loose wiring through the openings.
  2. Align the screw holes on the panel with the corresponding holes on the refrigerator frame.
  3. Insert and tighten all the screws with the nut driver to secure the panel back in place.
  4. Push the power cord into its slot on the panel.
  5. Reconnect the water line plug.
  6. Plug the refrigerator back into its power source and reconnect the water supply.
  7. Turn on the fridge and listen to it to make sure the new start device is working correctly.
