Tools and materials

Gather the following tools and replacement part before tackling this repair on your LG or Kenmore refrigerator model:

Safety First

Safety comes first when working on any appliance. Here are some practical tips to help keep you safe:

  • Always turn off the power by unplugging the appliance or switching off the circuit breaker before starting. This protects you from the risk of electric shock.
  • Wear insulated gloves to protect your hands from sharp edges, pinching hazards, or debris.
  • Take your time and work at a steady pace to avoid accidents or injuries.
  • Make sure your workspace is well-lit so you can clearly see and access the parts you’re working on.
  • Keep your area organized and free of clutter, and ensure children and pets are kept away from the workspace.
  • Never handle internal parts with wet hands. Make sure both your hands and the work area are completely dry.
  • Check your appliance’s user manual for specific instructions or safety guidelines related to your repair.
  • Handle parts gently to prevent damaging the appliance or injuring yourself by using too much force.
  • Wear safety glasses if you’re dealing with chemicals, dust, or large debris to protect your eyes.
  • If the appliance was recently used, give it time to cool down before working on any heated components.
  • Take photos or notes of wiring connections before disconnecting anything. This makes reassembly much easier.
  • Avoid touching exposed wires or terminals. If you need to handle wires, use non-conductive tools or wear insulated gloves to reduce the risk of electrical shock.

Removal and Disassembly Steps

  1. Pull the freezer door fully open to access the top freezer drawer.
  2. Ensure the ice bucket is empty.
  3. Lift up the front edge of the bucket and slide it straight out to remove.
  4. Grasp the front edge of the freezer drawer, lift the front slightly, and pull it out completely from the rails.
  5. Set the drawer on a table or flat work surface.
  6. Turn the drawer upside down to expose the underside where the roller is mounted.
  7. Use a small flat-blade screwdriver to pry under the edge of the roller assembly.
  8. Work the roller out of its slot and pull it free from the drawer.
  9. Discard the old roller.

Installation and Reassembly Steps

  1. Take the new roller assembly and position it in the same orientation as the old one.
  2. Ensure the locking tab is facing outward, so it lines up with the corresponding notch on the drawer.
  3. Align the roller in the slot and press it firmly until it clicks into place.
  4. Position the drawer back onto the freezer rails.
  5. Slide it straight in and press down so it locks onto the rails securely.
  6. Test the drawer by sliding it in and out—it should glide smoothly.
  7. Align the curved edge of the ice bucket with the matching curved guide inside the freezer.
  8. Gently lower the bucket into place.
  9. Close the freezer door.
  10. Plug the refrigerator back in or turn the breaker back on.
  11. Wait a few moments and confirm that the unit resumes cooling properly.
