Safety first

Safety comes first when working on any appliance. Here are some practical tips to help keep you safe:

  • Always turn off the power by unplugging the appliance or switching off the circuit breaker before starting. This protects you from the risk of electric shock.
  • Wear insulated gloves to protect your hands from sharp edges, pinching hazards, or debris.
  • Take your time and work at a steady pace to avoid accidents or injuries.
  • Make sure your workspace is well-lit so you can clearly see and access the parts you’re working on.
  • Keep your area organized and free of clutter, and ensure children and pets are kept away from the workspace.
  • Never handle internal parts with wet hands. Make sure both your hands and the work area are completely dry.
  • Check your appliance’s user manual for specific instructions or safety guidelines related to your repair.
  • Handle parts gently to prevent damaging the appliance or injuring yourself by using too much force.
  • Wear safety glasses if you’re dealing with chemicals, dust, or large debris to protect your eyes.
  • If the appliance was recently used, give it time to cool down before working on any heated components.
  • Take photos or notes of wiring connections before disconnecting anything. This makes reassembly much easier.
  • Avoid touching exposed wires or terminals. If you need to handle wires, use non-conductive tools or wear insulated gloves to reduce the risk of electrical shock.

Uninstall the dishwasher

Before you start any repair work on your appliance, make sure your appliance is unplugged from the power source or turned off at the circuit breakers. Also, make sure to turn off the water so there are no leaks.

  1. Check the adjustable leveling legs under the dishwasher. Unscrew them several turns so they don’t get caught when pulling out the appliance.
  2. Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the screws that secure the dishwasher to the underside of the countertop. There are typically two screws along the top front edge that must be removed.
  3. Carefully pull the dishwasher straight outward, watching for any obstructions. Make sure the drain hose and power cord slide cleanly through openings.
  4. Pull the dishwasher out as far as possible while still allowing access to the spring at the top of the door. Lay down some towels or cardboard to avoid floor damage.

Remove the old door spring

With the dishwasher pulled out, you can now access and replace the worn-out door spring:

  1. Locate the door spring mechanism on the left or right side of the door near the top.
  2. Note what notch the end of the spring is hooked into. This needs to be replicated when installing the new spring.
  3. Pull firmly on the end of the spring to unhook it from the notch. The plastic bushing will come off with the spring.
  4. Remove the plastic bushing from the old spring. This will be reused.
  5. Inspect the spring area for any signs of damage. make sure the notch area is intact.

Install the new door spring

  1. Slide the plastic bushing removed from the old spring onto the new replacement spring.
  2. Locate the notch where the old spring was mounted and hook the new spring into this notch.
  3. Stretch the spring slightly and slide the plastic bushing onto the hinge pin on the dishwasher door.
  4. Release the tension on the spring. It should now be securely mounted.
  5. Test operation by opening and closing the door several times. The door should stay partially open when released and close smoothly.

If the door drops too quickly or doesn’t open properly, adjust the spring position on the notches until proper tension is achieved. You may need to try a few different notch positions.

Reinstall the dishwasher

Once the new door spring is installed and operating correctly, you can reinstall the dishwasher:

  1. Push the dishwasher back into the cabinet opening carefully. Don’t damage the power cord or hoses.
  2. Thread the drain hose up through the cabinet and reconnect it to the sink drain or garbage disposal. Tighten the hose clamp securely.
  3. Thread the water supply line up through the cabinet and reconnect it to the dishwasher inlet valve. Tighten firmly with a wrench.
  4. Adjust the leveling legs on the base of the dishwasher for proper alignment with the counters.
  5. Secure the dishwasher to the underside of the countertop with the original screws.

Restore power and water supply

The final steps are to restore power, water supply, and test operation:

  1. Turn on the hot water supply valve under the sink to restore water flow.
  2. Switch the circuit breaker back to the ON position.
  3. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  4. Run a test cycle to verify proper dishwasher operation. Check for leaks and make sure the door opens and closes properly.
  5. If leaks are noticed, turn off the water supply and double-check the connections.
