Has the light gone out inside your refrigerator? Don’t panic – replacing a broken LED light assembly is an easy, straightforward repair you can totally do yourself.

LED lights have become the lighting of choice in today’s refrigerators due to their longevity, low power draw, and bright light output. However, they can and do eventually fail. When an LED stops working entirely, replacing the light assembly as a whole is faster and easier than diagnosing and replacing individual LEDs. Thankfully, refrigerator LED light assemblies are inexpensive and designed to be easily accessible for DIY repairs.

Materials needed

You’ll need a few basic tools and supplies:

  • Putty knife – to pry off the old light assembly
  • Wire strippers – to detach and prepare the new wire harness
  • Pliers – to secure the wire connectors
  • New LED light assembly – (W10695459)
  • Wire connectors – usually provided with the new assembly
  • Instruction sheet – comes with a new part for wiring details

Safety precautions

Safety should always be a priority when working on any appliance. Here are a few practical tips to help you stay safe:

  • Turn off the power to the appliance by unplugging it or switching off the circuit breaker before starting any maintenance or repairs. This protects you from the risk of electric shock.
  • Wear insulated gloves to shield your hands from sharp edges, pinching hazards, or debris.
  • Work at a steady pace and take your time to avoid accidents or injuries.
  • Make sure your workspace is well-lit so you can clearly see and access the parts you’re working on.
  • Keep the area clear of clutter, and ensure children and pets stay out of the workspace.
  • Never handle internal parts with wet hands. Check that both your hands and the work area are completely dry.
  • Refer to your appliance’s user manual for any specific instructions or safety guidelines related to the part or repair.
  • Handle parts gently to avoid damage to the appliance or potential injuries from applying too much force.
  • Use safety glasses when dealing with chemicals, dust, or large debris to protect your eyes from harm.
  • If the appliance was recently used, give it enough time to cool down before working on any heated components.
  • Take photos or notes of wiring connections and terminals before disconnecting anything to make reassembly easier.
  • Avoid touching exposed wires or terminals. If you must handle wires, use non-conductive tools or wear insulated gloves to minimize the risk of electrical shock.

Step-by-step replacement

Now let’s go through the full process of diagnosing and replacing a burned-out LED light assembly in a Whirlpool, KitchenAid, or Maytag refrigerator:

Unplug the refrigerator

  1. Before doing any work on your fridge, unplug it from the wall outlet.
  2. Make sure the power is fully cut by opening the door to clear the internal light. Better safe than shocked!

Remove the old LED assembly

With the fridge unplugged, you can now safely remove the bad LED light assembly.

  1. Locate the small plastic locking tabs along one side of the housing.
  2. Take a putty knife and slide the flat edge underneath the LED light, gently prying outward.
  3. Pressing outwards will pop the assembly loose from the tabs securing it.
  4. Once released, slide the entire LED light to the left to detach it from the remaining tabs.

Disconnect the wire harness

Behind the removed LED assembly is a wire harness connector. Press down on the locking tab to detach the plug.

Carefully pull the two halves apart, being cautious not to yank or pull wires out. Disconnect the old LED light completely from the wire harness.

Prep the new LED wire harness

Your replacement LED light assembly will come with a new wire harness already attached. You need to connect this new harness to the existing fridge wires.

  1. Start by comparing the two harness plugs – old and new. If they match, you can simply plug them together.
  2. However, most often the connectors will be incompatible like in this repair.
  3. So instead, we’ll need to splice and connect the raw wires manually.
  4. Cut off the new LED’s harness right near the plug.
  5. Strip away a 1/2″ of insulation from the wire ends using wire strippers.
  6. Do the same to the old harness wires you removed from the fridge.

Connect wire colors

With all wire ends stripped, you can now join them together. The key is matching wire colors for proper polarity.

The standard configuration is:

  • Black wire to black wire
  • White wire to white wire
  • Ground wire to ground wire

Securely twist the ends of matching wires together. Then insert each connected pair into the provided wire connectors and crimp down firmly.

Install the new LED light

  1. Double-check that all wire connections are tight and insulated.
  2. Now comes the fun part – installing the new LED light assembly.
  3. First, tuck all connected wires and the harness plug into the open cavity in the refrigerator wall.
  4. Carefully align the new LED light with the mounting tabs along one side.
  5. The wire side will slide in first, while you press the opposite end until the light clicks into place secured on the plastic tabs.

Restore power and test

  1. The last step – plug the refrigerator power cord back into the outlet and restore electricity.
  2. Open the door and verify that the new LED light illuminates normally.
  3. If the light is still dim or flickers, check that the wire connections are fully seated.

With the repair complete, you can safely load your refrigerated and frozen goods back in!
