What is the diverter motor & why is it important?
During the wash cycle, the diverter motor activates and directs water to the spray arms. The spray arms distribute water and detergent across the dishes so they get cleaned. The diverter motor adjusts the water flow, which allows the upper and lower spray arms to rotate and reach all areas of the dishwasher.
The diverter motor also contributes to the dishwasher’s ability to offer various washing cycles. It controls water flow, which allows for the customization of cycles, such as Normal, Sanitize and Auto.
Symptoms of a faulty diverter motor include:
- Less-than-ideal dishwasher cleaning
- Reduced water pressure or no water spraying from either the upper or lower spray arm
- Unusual noises, such as grinding or buzzing sounds, during the wash cycle
- An error code related to the diverter motor or water flow issues displayed on the control panel
- Visible damage or malfunctioning of the motor, such as overheating or electrical issues
What you’ll need
- 5/8-inch open-ended wrench
- 5/16-inch nut driver
- Phillips screwdriver
- Torx 15 screwdriver
- Small flathead screwdriver
- Wire strippers
- Zip tie

Check part compatibility
Before you replace the diverter motor, make sure you have an OEM part that’s compatible with your specific dishwasher model. To do this, you’ll need to find the appliance model number.
The model number will say MOD or Model before the numbers and is typically found on a sticker or a metal plate in one of the following locations:
- Inside the dishwasher, on the side wall or on the door frame
- On the back or bottom of the dishwasher
- On the control panel or console
Once you’ve found the model number, write it down or take a clear photo of it for reference.

Safety precautions
When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
- Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by eliminating any risk of electric shock.
- Turn off the water supply at the outlet before beginning repairs. Keep towels ready to catch any residual water in the system when removing parts.
- If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
- Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
- Work in a well-lit area so you can see and access appliance parts.
- Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
- Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
- Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
- Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
- When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
- Always take photos or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting them to make reassembly easier.

- Open the dishwasher door and remove the lower dish rack.
- Open the dish rack stoppers on each side to release the upper dish rack.
- Slide out the upper dish rack and push the rails back in.
- Turn the base of the spray arm clockwise to free it, then lift it off.
- Remove the filter basket by turning it counterclockwise to unlock it, then lift it to take out the screen.

- Lift and remove the diffuser plate.
- Take out the two Phillips screws that hold the dishwasher mounting brackets to the countertop.
- Place a towel or a plastic container under the shut-off valve to catch any water. Use a 5/8 open-ended wrench to disconnect the fill water line.

- Attach the wires to the fuse by inserting them into the designated openings. Tighten the screws with a small flat-blade screwdriver.
- Secure the wires next to the harness with a zip tie and trim off any excess wire. Be careful not to cut any other wires. If the yellow plug from the turbidity sensor is loose, push it back onto its connector.
