What is the door cable?

The door cables connect the dishwasher door hinges to the door springs. They regulate the door’s opening motion and prevent it from falling. Cables should be replaced if they are broken or missing.

Tools and materials needed

Here’s what you need to get started:

Safety first

Your safety should always be the top priority when performing any appliance repair:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before attempting any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of electric shock.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Take your time and don’t rush while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Consider wearing safety glasses and/or a dust mask when working with chemicals, dust or a large amount of debris to prevent irritation or injury.
  • Turn off the water supply to the dishwasher to prevent leaks.
  • If your appliance has any parts that hold water, turn off the water supply at the outlet before beginning repairs. Keep towels ready to catch any residual water in the system when removing parts.

Replacement steps

Open the Dishwasher and Detach from the Counter

  1. Open the dishwasher door fully.
  2. Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the two screws securing the dishwasher to the underside of the countertop.

Disconnect Water Supply and Drain Lines

  1. Place a towel and a container under the water supply connection to catch any water leakage.
  2. Use a 5/8-inch open-ended wrench to loosen and disconnect the water supply line from the shut-off valve.
  3. Using a 5/16-inch nut driver, loosen the hose clamp securing the drain hose to the air gap or disposal.
  4. Remove the drain hose carefully. Use the towel or container to absorb any residual water inside the hose.

Pull the Dishwasher Out

  1. Carefully slide the dishwasher out from its position under the counter.
  2. Take care not to damage the power cord, drain hose, or water line as you pull it forward.

Remove the Old Door Cable

  1. Locate the door spring and cable assembly on the side of the dishwasher.
  2. If the spring is still attached to the cable, disconnect the door cable from both the hinge arm and the spring.
  3. Remove the spring from the dishwasher frame.

Install the New Door Cable

  1. Attach one end of the new cable to the hinge arm and the other end to the spring.
  2. Ensure the cable routes over the glide bracket properly.
  3. Stretch the spring and insert it into the upper hole on the frame.
  4. Repeat this process for the other side if you are replacing both cables.

Reinstall the Dishwasher

  1. Push the dishwasher back into its place beneath the counter.
  2. Feed the power cord, water line, and drain hose through the divider or cabinet wall.

Reconnect the Water Supply and Drain Hose

  1. Manually thread the water supply line back onto the shut-off valve.
  2. Tighten the connection using the 5/8-inch open-ended wrench.
  3. Remove the towel and container from beneath the valve area.
  4. Reconnect the drain hose to the air gap or disposal.
  5. Tighten the hose clamp using the 5/16-inch nut driver.

Secure the Dishwasher and Test

  1. Secure the dishwasher to the countertop by reinstalling the two Phillips screws.
  2. Close the dishwasher door.
  3. Turn the water supply back on.
