Safety precautions

When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by eliminating any risk of electric shock.
  • Turn off the water supply at the outlet before beginning repairs. Keep towels ready to catch any residual water in the system when removing parts.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Always take photos or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting them to make reassembly easier.

How to replace the diverter valve seal

Get your Bosch dishwasher back in shape with these replacement steps.

  1. Unplug the dishwasher from the power outlet.
  2. Shut off the water supply to the dishwasher (usually under the sink).
  3. Put a towel down to catch any water that may come out when disconnecting the fill line and drain hose.
  4. Find the fill line, which is connected to the hot water valve. Turn off the water valve and use a 5/8-inch wrench to loosen and unscrew the hose. Set it aside.
  5. Follow the drain hose to its end, which may go to the garbage disposal if you have one. Use a 5/16-inch nut driver to loosen the clamp and remove the hose. Set it aside.
  6. Open the dishwasher door and use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws that hold the dishwasher to the countertop.
  7. Lift the door and pull the dishwasher out a little bit. Then grab the frame and pull it out the rest of the way.
  8. Fold up the insulation, lift it off and set it aside.
  9. Find the diverter valve at the bottom left side of the dishwasher.
  10. Reach in and use a flathead screwdriver to lift the locking tab on the wiring harness and pull it out.
  11. The clamp holding the diverter valve is crimped, so you may need to use a flathead screwdriver to loosen it. Once it’s loose, pull the clamp out.
  12. Turn the diverter valve clockwise to unlock it from the tabs and pull it down to detach it from the sump. Remove the old diverter valve and seal.
  13. Slide a new clamp onto the rubber fitting and position it slightly higher than necessary. Tighten it down using a 1/4-inch nut driver so that it’s snug.
  14. Place the new seal into the groove on the sump to hold it in place.
  15. Lift the new diverter valve into place and lock it in position.
  16. Plug the wiring harness back into place.
  17. Reach to the other side of the dishwasher and reconnect the circulation pump motor to the sump.
  18. Use a nut driver to tighten the clamp on the other side to create a good seal.
  19. Set the insulation in place and unfold it. Make sure it goes into the clips that hold it onto the water fill assembly.
  20. Push the dishwasher in about halfway and check that the lines aren’t caught on anything underneath the sink.
  21. Push the dishwasher in the rest of the way.
  22. Attach the drain hose and use a 5/16-inch nut driver to tighten the clamp.
  23. Start hand-tightening the water line, then use a 5/8-inch wrench to tighten it further.
  24. Close the cabinet doors and the dishwasher door.
  25. Use a Phillips screwdriver to put in the screws that hold the dishwasher to the countertop.
  26. Plug the dishwasher back in and turn the water supply back on.
  27. Run a test cycle to make sure the dishwasher is working correctly.
