Check the part for compatibility

Before replacing the dispenser control board, make sure you have an OEM part that’s compatible with your specific appliance model. To do this, you will need to locate the appliance model number.

Your fridge model number is typically found on a sticker or a metal plate in one of the following locations:

  • Inside the refrigerator, either on the side wall or the ceiling.
  • On the back of the refrigerator, near the bottom.
  • On the side or bottom of the refrigerator door.

Once you have located the model number, write it down or take a clear photo for reference.

Safety precautions

When working on any appliance, always keep safety first to avoid personal injury or damage to the appliance or parts. Here are some safety tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before attempting any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of electric shock.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Take your time and don’t rush while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Consider wearing safety glasses and/or a dust mask when working with chemicals, dust or a large amount of debris to prevent irritation or injury.

Replacement steps

  1. To access the dispenser control board, you need to remove the control panel. Start by removing the single Phillips screw on the left side of the panel.
  2. Find the slots on each side of the panel, right underneath it. Insert a flat screwdriver into the slots and gently push it up to release the panel. Repeat this on both sides until the control panel is loose.
  3. Carefully pull out the old control panel from its position.
  4. Locate the plug connecting the control panel assembly and the refrigerator. Press down on the locking tab and disconnect the plug.
  5. Unplug the power plug from the old control panel assembly by pressing down on the tab and pulling it up.
  6. Remove the three Phillips screws securing the cover of the control panel assembly.
  7. Lift the control panel assembly cover off and set it aside.
  8. You will now see the dispenser control board. Take note of its position and orientation.
  9. To remove the display label from the control board, use a heat gun set on low (around 300 degrees Fahrenheit). Move the heat gun up and down and side to side over the label. Don’t concentrate heat in one spot for too long.
  10. Once the label has been heated, use a putty knife to carefully peel it off. Take your time so that the label comes off in one piece.
  11. Set the removed label to the side with the adhesive side up.
  12. Take the new dispenser control board and put the label on it. Make sure it’s aligned correctly.
  13. Install the control board and label assembly back into the housing. Make sure that the two pins on the board align with the corresponding holes and that the three screw holes are properly aligned.
  14. Use the three Phillips screws to secure the cover back onto the control board assembly.
  15. Reconnect the power plug to the control panel assembly.
  16. Place the control panel back into position on the refrigerator. Make sure the bottom is aligned and locked.
  17. Use a Phillips screwdriver to secure the control panel.
  18. Turn on the refrigerator and check that it’s cooling correctly.
