Why is a drain pump important?

Every dishwasher has a key player at its core – the drain pump. This unsung hero tackles the dirty work of clearing out the water after each wash, so your dishes can sparkle and be all set for your next cooking adventure.

When the drain pump fails, the consequences are immediate and unpleasant. Water accumulates in the tub, leaving your dishes soaking in a grimy pool, and the entire dishwashing process grinds to a halt. It’s a scenario no homeowner wants to face, especially when entertaining guests or preparing for a big family gathering.

Luckily, swapping out the drain pump is pretty simple and something many DIY enthusiasts can handle. With a couple of must-have tools, a bit of mechanical savvy, and a touch of determination, you can revive your Bosch dishwasher and get it back in action.

Tools and materials needed

Before diving into the repair process, it’s crucial to ensure you have the necessary tools and materials at your disposal. Here’s what you’ll need:

Safety first

When working on any appliance, always keep safety first to avoid personal injury or damage to the appliance or parts. Here are some safety tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of electric shock.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Consider wearing safety glasses and/or a dust mask when working with chemicals, dust or a large amount of debris to prevent irritation or injury.
  • Turn off the water supply at the outlet before beginning repairs. Keep towels ready to catch any residual water in the system when removing parts.

Step-by-step guide

Now that you’re prepared, let’s dive into the step-by-step process of replacing the drain pump in your Bosch dishwasher:

Step 1- Remove the outer door panel

Replacing the drain pump begins with removing the outer door panel to access the interior components of the dishwasher. Follow these steps:

  1. Use your Phillips screwdriver to remove the two screws located at the bottom corners of the door panel.
  2. Remove the four Torx T20 screws located across the top of the door panel. Set them aside for later use.
  3. Locate and remove the two Torx T20 screws on each side of the door panel. Note that these side screws are slightly shorter than the top ones.
  4. Carefully pry off the touchpad control panel and let it hang down, being extra cautious not to damage any wire connections.
  5. With all the screws removed and the control panel off, gently pull up on the door panel to release it from the top edge clips. Tilt the panel outward from the top and lift it off, placing it in a safe spot for later.

Step 2- Remove the access panel

With the outer door panel removed you’ll need to access the drain pump by removing the access panel:

  1. Locate the access panel on the right interior side of the dishwasher tub.
  2. Use your Phillips screwdriver to remove the two screws, one from each upper corner of the panel.
  3. Once the screws are out, the access panel is designed to drop down and come free. Set it aside.

Step 3- Disconnect the drain pump wiring

Before proceeding further, you’ll need to disconnect the power wires from the drain pump:

  1. Find the drain pump in the lower right corner of the dishwasher tub.
  2. Locate the wire harness held by a plastic retainer clip. Release the wire harness from the clip.
  3. Press down on the release tab on the wire connector plug while gently wiggling and pulling the plug free from the drain pump. Make sure the connection is secure.

Step 4- Remove the old drain pump

Now comes the moment you’ve been waiting for – removing the old, malfunctioning drain pump:

  1. Examine the circular drain pump housing for a locking tab, typically found at about the 4 o’clock position.
  2. Using a flathead screwdriver, press down on the locking tab.
  3. While pressing the tab, grip the drain pump body and rotate it clockwise to unthread it from the drain motor.
  4. Once unthreaded, pull the pump housing straight out to remove it. Take a moment to inspect the old pump for any visible damage or debris clogs.
  5. Use towels to soak up any water in the base of the dishwasher, if needed.

Step 5- Install the new drain pump

With the old drain pump removed, you’re ready to install the new replacement:

  1. Begin by applying some liquid soap or lubricant to the rubber gasket of the new drain pump. This will make it easier to slide into place.
  2. Orient the new pump into the drain motor port and press it straight in.
  3. While firmly pressing in, rotate the pump body counter-clockwise to thread it into the drain motor. You’ll feel it click into place once it’s fully threaded.
  4. Reconnect the wire harness plug to the drain pump, ensuring a secure connection. Use the plastic retainer clip to secure the wires again.

Step 6- Reassemble the dishwasher

With the new drain pump successfully installed, it’s time to reassemble your Bosch dishwasher:

  1. Start by replacing the insulation pad in the dishwasher tub base.
  2. Use the two Phillips screws to reattach the access panel securely.
  3. Carefully place the outer door panel back on its hinges at the top.
  4. Reinsert and tighten the side Torx T20 screws.
  5. Replace the four Torx T20 screws across the top of the door panel.
  6. Attach the touchpad control panel, being cautious of wire connections.
  7. Reinsert and tighten the two Phillips screws at the bottom corners of the door panel.

Step 7- Test and reset the dishwasher

After reassembling the dishwasher, it’s time for the moment of truth – testing and resetting your appliance:

  1. Turn the water supply back on and check for any leaks. Tighten connections if needed.
  2. Restore power to the dishwasher by flipping the breaker.
  3. Run a test cycle to verify normal wash and drain performance. Make sure there are no leaks or errors.
