Safety precautions
- Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before attempting any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of injury from electric shock.
- Take your time and don’t rush while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries.
- Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access the interior parts.
- Clear your workspace of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
- Never work on internal parts with bare wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
- Check your user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions for your part or appliance.
- Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause injury.
- Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts, pinching hazards and debris.
- Wear safety glasses when working with chemicals, dust or cleaning large debris to prevent injury.
- Don’t test wiring with a multimeter for live voltage if you’re unfamiliar with how to prevent short circuiting when testing.
Replacement steps
- Begin by removing the drip pan located at the bottom of the refrigerator. If it’s difficult to remove, use the flat blade screwdriver to pry it up, starting from one corner.
- Next, locate and remove the screws that secure the dispenser cover. Use the nut driver to loosen and remove the screws.
- Once the screws are removed, push down on the dispenser cover and pull it out to detach it from the refrigerator. Flip the cover over to access the backside.
- On the backside of the cover, locate and remove the plugs that connect to the dispenser. Gently pull out the plugs one by one.
- Set the dispenser cover aside in a safe place for later use.
- Now, locate and remove the three quarter-inch screws that hold the cover in place. Use the nut driver to loosen and remove these screws.
- If there is a water line attached to the bracket, remove it by unscrewing the screw on the left side. If the line is secured with tape, peel off the tape to release it.
- Carefully drop down the bracket assembly with the solenoid and ice door.
- To remove the ice chute door, push on the bottom to release the two clips on the side. Then, pull down on the door to release the two top hooks.
- Take the removed ice chute door to your work area.
- Remove the door seal by peeling it off. Set it aside for later use.
- Use a flat blade screwdriver to push out the foam insulation from the old door.
- Install the foam insulation into the new ice chute door. Place the door seal back onto the new ice chute door.
- Return to the refrigerator and reinstall the ice chute door. Align the two hooks or bar with the corresponding slots and push up to lock them into place.
- Secure the door by reattaching the screws and tighten them using the quarter-inch nut driver.
- Reinstall the dispenser cover by connecting the plugs. First, connect the plug that was removed last, and then connect the other plug.
- Turn the cover around and engage the two tabs into their slots.
- Lift the cover up to lock the top portion into place. Align the holes at the bottom and secure the cover with the two quarter-inch screws.
- Reinstall the drip pan. Plug the refrigerator back in and check that it is cooling properly.
Congratulations! You have successfully replaced the ice chute door in your Whirlpool refrigerator.
