On a Samsung washer, the vibration sensor is at the top front of the outer tub in the washer to detect any irregular vibrations and signal the control board to self-adjust as needed. If the vibration sensor fails, it can cause the washer to stop spinning, and the error code 8E may be displayed.

You can replace the vibration sensor yourself with a few tools and a bit of time, without professional assistance. Let’s get your Samsung washer functioning correctly again.

Check part compatibility

Before you replace the vibration sensor, make sure you have an OEM part that’s compatible with your specific washer model. To do this, you’ll need to find the appliance model number.

The model number will say MOD or Model before the numbers and is typically found on a sticker or a metal plate in one of the following locations:

  • On the frame inside the door
  • On the control panel top or side
  • On the cabinet, at the bottom or side

Once you’ve found the model number, write it down or take a clear photo of it for reference.

Safety tips

When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by eliminating any risk of electric shock.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Turn off the water supply at the outlet before beginning repairs. Keep towels ready to catch any residual water in the system when removing parts.
  • Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Always take photos or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting them to make reassembly easier.

How to change out the vibration sensor

Follow these steps to replace the vibration sensor on your Samsung washing machine.

  1. Unplug the washer from the power outlet and shut off the water supply to the washer.
  2. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the two screws holding the top panel.
  3. Pull the top panel back and lift it off to expose the vibration sensor at the top front of the outer tub.
  4. Find the retainer clips holding the harness that’s connected to the vibration sensor in place. Twist open the retainer clips and pull the harness out.
  5. Use pliers to squeeze the tabs of the retainer clip and remove it from the harness.
  6. Remove the two Phillips screws holding the vibration sensor. Space may be limited on top, so you can use a short Phillips screwdriver or a ratchet with a 1/4-inch head and regular Phillips bit.
  7. Lift the old vibration sensor off and disconnect the plug by pressing down on the tab and pulling it apart.
  8. Attach the plug of the new vibration sensor into the corresponding socket.
  9. Place the new vibration sensor into the retainer clip and align the opening with the pin and the two pins with the steel openings on the washer.
  10. Insert and tighten the two Phillips screws to secure the new vibration sensor in place.
  11. Attach the harness to the brace by inserting the clip into the designated slot and pushing it in until it locks.
  12. Find the second retainer clip and place the harness into it.
  13. Position the top panel back onto the washer, a few inches away from the control panel.
  14. Slide the top panel forward to lock it in place at the front.
  15. Reinstall the top panel screws with a Phillips screwdriver.
  16. Plug the washer back into the power outlet and turn on the water supply.
  17. Run a test cycle to check for any problems.
