What the error code means

The “dE” error code on an LG front load washing machine indicates that the washing machine is unable to detect that the door is properly closed and locked. This can happen if the door is not fully closed or if there is a problem with the door lock mechanism or door switch.

Safety precautions

When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before attempting any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of injury from electric shock.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts, pinching hazards and debris.
  • Take your time and don’t rush while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access the interior parts.
  • Clear your workspace of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with bare wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check your user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions for your part or appliance.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause injury.
  • Wear safety glasses when working with chemicals, dust or cleaning large debris to prevent injury.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time for any heating parts to cool down before working on it.
  • Take pictures or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting to prevent any problems with reassembly.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Turn off the water supply at the outlet before beginning repairs to any appliance parts that hold water. Have towels ready for any residual water in the system when removing parts.

Troubleshooting steps

Check the door

  1. Verify that the washing machine door is fully closed and latched properly.
  2. Make sure no obstructions are preventing the door from closing completely.
  3. Check for any damage or wear on the door gasket that could prevent a proper seal.

Verify the wiring

  1. Unplug the washing machine and locate the door switch connector on the control board.
  2. Carefully disconnect the door switch connector and inspect the terminals for any signs of damage, corrosion, or loose connections.
  3. Inspect the wiring harness that connects the door switch to the control board for any damage, such as cuts, fraying, or loose connections.
  4. Use a multimeter to test the continuity of the wiring harness between the door switch and the control board.
  5. Replace the wiring harness if any issues are found.

Test the door switch

  1. Locate the door switch assembly, accessible by removing the front panel of the washing machine.
  2. Disconnect the door switch and use a multimeter to test it for proper continuity.
  3. With the door open, the switch should show continuity (low resistance).
  4. With the door closed, the switch should show no continuity (high resistance).
  5. Replace the door switch assembly if it is faulty.

Replace the control board

  1. If the door switch assembly is functioning correctly, the issue may be with the control board.
  2. Carefully inspect the control board for any visible signs of damage, such as burnt or loose connections.
  3. If the control board is faulty, it will need to be replaced.
