Having problems with your Whirlpool, KitchenAid, or Maytag washing machine not draining properly or stopping mid-cycle? There’s a good chance the drain pump needs to be replaced.
The drain pump does what it sounds like: it drains water from the washer tub and expels it out via the drain hose. Over time, the drain pump can fail or become clogged with debris, which can prevent water from draining from the machine.
Replacing this part is a straightforward do-it-yourself repair that you should be able to knock out in under an hour with some basic tools and a new OEM drain pump.
Let’s walk through the entire process so you can get your washer’s drain pump replaced and your machine draining properly again – all without the need for an expensive service call.

Safety precautions
When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
- Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by eliminating any risk of electric shock.
- If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
- Turn off the water supply at the outlet before beginning repairs. Keep towels ready to catch any residual water in the system when removing parts.
- Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
- Work in a well-lit area so you can see and access appliance parts.
- Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
- Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
- Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
- Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
- Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
- When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
- Always take photos or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting them to make reassembly easier.
How to replace the drain pump
Follow these steps to change out a faulty drain pump in a Whirlpool, Maytag or KitchenAid washing machine.
- Unplug the washer from the power outlet and turn off the water supply line, then disconnect the water hoses.
- Carefully tilt the washer forward and place something under it (a small wooden block or rolled-up towel should work) for support. The washer is heavy, so take care when moving it.
- Remove the installation pad at the bottom of the washer by bending it and pulling it up.
- Find the drain pump, which is situated at the very bottom of the washer casing.
- Place a towel under the drain pump to catch any residual water as you disassemble parts.
- Use a flathead screwdriver to pry the two wires connecting to the drain pump terminals loose.
- Use pliers to squeeze and slide the hose clamps off the drain pump hoses. Pull the hoses off.
- Use a nut driver to remove the three 5/16-inch mounting screws that hold the drain pump.
- Lift the drain pump straight up and out of the opening.
- Remove the plastic retaining clip from the pump opening with a flathead screwdriver.
- Install the new drain pump by sliding it into position so the hose cutout fits over the locating pin.
- Reinsert the three 5/16-inch mounting screws and tighten them with the nut driver.
- Snap the plastic retaining clip back into place over the pump base.
- Slide the hoses back onto the pump, then use pliers to secure the hose clamps.
- Reconnect the two wires to their respective terminals on the pump.
- Replace the installation pad on the bottom of the washer.
- Return the washer to an upright position.
- Reconnect the water supply and plug the washer back into the power outlet.
- Run a drain and spin cycle to check for leaks and make sure the drain pump is working correctly.
