Why Replace a Gas Range Burner?

Gas stove burners are subjected to extremely high heat day after day. Over time, this can cause issues such as:

  • Uneven flames or hot spots on the burner
  • The burner not igniting properly or taking too long to light
  • Weak flames or flames dying out during cooking
  • The burner makes popping noises when lit
  • Burner getting clogged with food debris

These symptoms indicate it’s time to replace the gas burner rather than try to clean or repair the old one. The burner assembly contains both the burner head that the flame comes out of, as well as the igniter that creates the spark to light the gas. So replacing this entire part is the best solution when you’re having gas range burner problems.

Replacing a faulty gas stove burner is probably easier than you think. In most cases, the burner units are designed to be easily removed and installed without needing to access the interior of the range. The repair can be completed in under an hour with minimal tools – no need to call an expensive appliance technician!

Gas Range Burner Replacement Parts

The main component that needs replacing on a malfunctioning gas stove burner is the burner head assembly. This part combines the burner head and igniter into one simple replacement part.

Be sure to check the manufacturer and model number on your appliance to find the correct replacement burner assembly.

In addition to the burner head assembly, you may also need:

  • Wire connectors – For detaching and reattaching the igniter wires
  • Gasket/sealant – For creating a tight seal around the new burner
  • Pipe wrench – For loosening a stuck burner base

Purchase your replacement gas stove burner assembly and other needed supplies before getting started on the repair.

Gas Stove Burner Replacement Safety Tips

Working with gas appliances always warrants extra safety precautions. Follow these important safety tips when replacing a gas range burner:

  • Turn off the gas supply valve to the range. This is typically located behind the range but may be situated elsewhere such as under or behind the kitchen sink.
  • Unplug the electrical power cord to the range or switch the appropriate circuit breaker off.
  • Let the burner cool completely before attempting removal.
  • Have adequate ventilation in the work area to dissipate any residual gas or fumes.
  • Make sure the new burner assembly is made specifically for your range make and model. Using the wrong part can be hazardous.
  • Check for gas leaks at all connections after installing the new burner.
  • Never try to repair a gas leak yourself. Call a professional technician.

Replacing a gas oven burner involves working around potentially hazardous gas connections. Use proper caution and care to ensure a safe repair.

How to Replace a Gas Stove Top Burner

Let’s get into the step-by-step process of how to remove your old malfunctioning gas stove burner and install a new replacement burner assembly.

  1. The first step is to shut off the gas and electrical power to the range. Locate the gas supply valve and turn it to the off position. Then unplug the range or turn off the appropriate circuit breaker.
  2. This eliminates the risk of igniting gas, getting shocked, or having the burner activate unexpectedly during the repair.
  3. If your range has a grate or set of grates over the burners, carefully lift those off and set them aside in a safe location. You’ll need unobstructed access to the burner later.
  4. There are likely various caps, guards, and burner parts covering the top of the burner assembly. Carefully remove these components so you can access the burner head underneath.
  5. Set all of these small parts aside and take care not to lose or mix them up. You’ll need to reinstall them later on the new burner.
  6. There will be either a large nut or a screw that holds the burner base down. You need to loosen this in order to remove the burner.
  7. Finding the nut or screw can be tricky. It’s often tucked under the edges of the cooktop.
  8. Use the proper wrench or screwdriver to loosen the retainer. Lefty loosey! Some burners are on very tightly, so putting some muscle into it may be required.
  9. Once the burner is loose, you’ll detach it from the two igniter wires – one for power and one for the sensor.
  10. Use caution when removing the wires. Be sure the burner is cool and use insulated tools. Don’t let wires drop down into the range’s interior!
  11. Now you can fully remove the burner assembly by lifting it straight up and out. Inspect the burner head and igniter for damage that necessitated the replacement.
  12. Also, take note of the condition of the gas line feed tube and other surrounding range components while you have full access.
  13. With the old burner removed, take the opportunity to clean the entire burner area thoroughly. Scrape off any caked-on food or grease deposits.
  14. You want the new burner to sit flush against the cooktop surface, so remove any debris that could cause uneven gaps.

Install New Burner Assembly

  1. Once prepped, you can install the new burner assembly.
  2. First, thread the igniter wires up through the hole where the burner sits. Carefully connect them to the igniter terminals on the new burner. Verify the connections are secure.
  3. Then align and lower the burner assembly into place. Turn the retaining nut/screw clockwise to secure the burner base tightly.
  4. The new burner is installed, but we aren’t done yet!
  5. Reconnect the gas line to the range’s gas inlet. Then turn on the gas supply valve and check for any leaks. If leaks are detected, turn the gas off and determine the cause. Call a professional immediately if leaks persist.
  6. You’re almost finished! Plug the range power cord back in or turn the circuit breaker on.
  7. Turn on one of the burners and verify that it ignites quickly and burns evenly without issues. Repeat for the other burners.
  8. If the burners have flame problems, carefully review your steps. Small adjustments to the burner may be required.
  9. The final step is to replace all the stove grates, caps, guards, and any other components that were removed at the start.
  10. Double-check that everything is aligned properly and secured in place.
