What is a selector switch & why would it need to be replaced?

The selector switch is a dial or knob on the control panel that allows you to choose different wash cycle options for a certain water temperature, spin speed, soil level, fabric type, etc.

The selector switch controls the washer settings by routing power to the appropriate parts. When you turn the dial, internal electrical contacts open and close to direct electricity to the right spots to engage the desired wash cycle option.

Over time, the internal contacts can wear out or get damaged from regular use. If the selector switch becomes faulty, certain cycle settings may stop working correctly or at all. For example, if you select a hot water wash but can’t get any hot water, the problem could be caused by a bad selector switch.

If you notice any of the following issues, the selector switch is likely faulty and needs to be replaced:

  • Wash cycle options don’t work or don’t respond when the dial is turned
  • Settings get “stuck” on one mode
  • The washer starts the wash cycle as soon as it’s turned on
  • There’s a burning smell from electrical arcing
  • There’s sparking around the selector switch

What you need

  • Replacement selector switch (make sure it’s compatible with your specific washer model before installing)
  • 1/4-inch nut driver
  • Flathead screwdriver

Important: The specific tools required may vary depending on the model of your appliance and the type of fasteners used on it. Always consult the user manual or refer to any specific instructions provided by the manufacturer for the recommended tools for your appliance model.

Safety precautions

When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by eliminating any risk of electric shock.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Turn off the water supply at the outlet before beginning repairs. Keep towels ready to catch any residual water in the system when removing parts.
  • Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Always take photos or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting them to make reassembly easier.

Step 1: Access the selector switch

  1. Unplug the washer from the power source.
  2. Move the washer away from the wall to access the back panel.
  3. Use a nut driver to remove the screws that hold the small access panel on the back of the washer.
  4. Pull out the small access panel by gently pulling on the two tabs.
  5. Remove the screws holding the larger access panel.
  6. Grab the bottom of the larger panel, pull it out past the water hoses, and then lower it down and turn it to set it aside.

Step 2: Disconnect the selector switch

  1. Pull off the knob from the selector switch.
  2. Find the tab on the selector switch, lift it up to release the switch, then turn it counterclockwise to remove it.

  4. Pull the old selector switch out of the washer.

Step 3: Installation and reassembly

  1. Plug the wire harness into the new selector switch and make sure it clicks into place.
  2. Insert the shaft of the new selector switch through the console by aligning it so it clicks and locks in place.
  3. Align the flat part on the knob with the shaft and push the knob onto the new selector switch.

Step 4: Reassemble the washer
