Replaced the failed mechanism by pulling out the dishwasher half way, removing the failed plastic parts ( one part connected to the door, the other to the spring), connecting the new part to the spring, reconnected the spring to the frame, stretched the spring, and connected the other end to the door. Did this on both sides.
