Thanks the videos showing how to disassembled the dryer I was able to determine that the problem was that the drive belt had come off. When that happened there is a switch that the tensioner actuates and this kills power to the motor. The whole process could be completed in about 20 minutes once you have taken the dryer apart a couple of times and are familiar with reassembly.
