I propped the lid open and bypassed the interlock to see the top agitator wasn't ratcheting correctly. The top clothes were just staying there and the bottom layer was being beaten to death by the lower section of the agitator.
I realized the "dogs" were worn out. A couple of YouTube videos later, once these parts arrived, and an hour later the problem was corrected.
Before I ordered them I did pull it apart to ensure that I didn't find additional parts damaged (seals and what-not). Easy with a flashlight and a long 7/16 nut driver.
