Andrew P Staten Island , NY July 04, 2017 Appliance: General Electric Gas Range JGBP28WEL3WW Broken oven lock handle by trying to force it open My daughter tried to force open the open where a fire started inside during self-clean. Good thing it did not open. Handle/lock is made to break in the locked position when forced. Unplugged stove. To open the door to repair, I used a butter knife to move the the locking part to the left.Opened door. Then I took off all the burners, unscrewed the nuts in the center of the burners with deep socket and removed nuts with magnet stick. Pushed down the gas valves to clear burners. Popped open the sealed burner top with putty knife. Lifted making sure gas valves do not move with top. Popped the short top holds on the left and right , had wife held top up. Unscrewed the four nuts that hold the handle/lock cover plate. Put plate aside. Unplugged the two wires from switch noting where they went, There were two wires and three possible connections. Unscrewed the two star screws in front of lock., Unscrewed one screw under on lock, and another screw in under/top of oven from inside of oven. Removed and replaced and did the reverse. Important - With top almost all the way down pushed burner valves back into burners from bottom and put on nuts.
