The Infinite Control Switch is an OEM part for Whirlpool ranges and cooktops. This part allows for precise adjustment of the heat level, enabling users to achieve the perfect temperature for various cooking techniques, from simmering to boiling. 

Causes of a bad Infinite Control Switch can range from electrical issues, such as short circuits or worn contacts, to mechanical failures within the switch itself.

Greg, If we're discussing the indicator light 313102 on the control panel, then yes the infinite switch could cause the light to remain on when the power is off. If we're discussing the hot surface indicator on the cooktop surface 8053722 then no the switch wouldn't be the issue. The hot surface lights are controlled by sensors located on the burner/element assembly under the cooktop. You'll need to check each sensor to determine which one is stuck or shorted and causing the light to remain on after the cooktop has cooled down.

Mike, NO, the infinite switches should not be sparking, or smoking for that matter. You will need to remove power to the product, and check for moisture or condensation accumulating inside the control assembly/panel. Then restore power to the product and make sure the 220 - 240 VAC is proper and consistent at the controls.
