Description

A breather, also called a breather tube, is an essential part of a number of small, gasoline-powered yard tools including pressure washers and lawn mowers. The breather actually has two functions on small engines. First, it has a reed that gathers the oil that moves through the breather tube to lubricate the piston and sends it back to the crankcase. Second, most breather tubes have a filter that cools the air around the manifold so the engine does not overheat. Breathers are subject to extreme heat from the engine manifold and constant exposure to hot oil. Over time, this can cause the breather and assembly parts to break down. Signs of a faulty breather include oil leaks, oily exhaust that is gray or blue, and declining engine performance.
