Hello Angie, When you remove the burner caps you will find that the burner rings are threaded on and the main top is actually held in place by the burner rings. This tool is designed to fit into the center of the burner rings and catch the notches. When you us it to turn the burner rings it will make it possible to thread them off so the internal components are accessible. For more detailed instructions, please include a model number. Thank you.
