By: Whirlpool
Part Number: OEM18103569
Manufacturer Part Number: W10899382

This diffuser—often called the refrigerator air damper—controls how much cold air flows from the freezer into the fresh food compartment. Replacing a worn diffuser helps restore even cooling and more stable temperatures throughout the refrigerator. What it does:

  • Opens and closes to regulate airflow from the freezer to the refrigerator
  • Helps maintain set temperatures and reduce warm spots or over-cooling
  • Common symptoms: fresh food too warm while freezer is OK, food freezing on shelves, weak airflow from upper vents, or clicking/buzzing from the diffuser area
  • Helps address frost or condensation near the diffuser outlet
What's included:
  • 1 diffuser
Install notes:
  • Disconnect power before servicing
  • Access from the refrigerator section; remove shelves/air duct covers as needed
  • Note wiring and orientation; remove mounting screws/clips and transfer any seals/insulation if present
  • After installation, restore power and allow up to 24 hours for temperatures to stabilize

Answer

Frank, To replace the diffuser in your refrigerator you will need to clear the top shelf of the refrigerator. On the left side wall there is a screw in the long piece between the diffuser and the control panel. Remove the screw and take that piece down. Then on the diffuser cover there will be another screw, remove it and diffuser cover. Then you will want to open the freezer door and take off the ice door and on the bottom of the right side of where the icemaker is there is a 1/4" screw. You will take out the screw and remove the cover over the wires of the icemaker that the screw was holding in place. Pull the icemaker out and disconnect the harness. At the top of the freezer there will be 2 screws for the icemaker ducting. Remove the screw and the ducting. Once this ducting is removed, on the right side wall you will see where the diffuser comes in. Push the corner tabs toward the center of the hole to release the diffuser. Reach into the refrigerator compartment and pull the diffuser out. There is a rod that connects to the diffuser that you have to turn the diffuser to a certain point to release the rod. You will remove the temperature probe that goes around the face and install the new part and reassemble. We also would not have any information on servicers or cost in your area as we are a parts supplier.
