John Ciak for Model Number merh865rab The hot surface light on my maytag touch control 800 electric smoothtop range stays on even though everything is cool. I understand that this may be a faulty part. Is this something that I can do myself and what do you suggest regarding troubleshooting? thank you
Answer John, A "hot surface " light remaining on is usually due to a stuck switch on the element sensor (Terminal 1B to 2B on the sensor should be an "open" circuit, when cool) if it's a closed circuit when cool, the switch is stuck and causing the light to remain on. You will need to raise and remove the glass cooktop, to access the burners and wiring and will need a multi meter TJMA-DMT3 to test the circuit on the sensor. To raise the cooktop, you'll need to remove power to the range, open the oven door and remove the two(2) 1/4 in. hex head screws(one on each end) of the flange, on each corner edge, of the oven opening, and raise the cooktop glass. remove the wires from the two terminals and check for the "open" circuit across the 1B and 2B termianls.
