Customer Questions and Answers for Compressor Start Relay by Whirlpool

By: Whirlpool
Part Number: OEM17363361
Manufacturer Part Number: W10613606

The Compressor Start Relay is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators. This component helps to kickstart the compressor, facilitating the refrigeration cycle that cools the interior of the fridge.

Such issues can stem from electrical failures within the relay, physical damage, or wear and tear from regular use. When the relay does not function correctly, it can lead to inconsistent cooling and, in severe cases, cause the compressor to overheat and fail prematurely.

Symptoms of a failing Compressor Start Relay include:

  • The refrigerator not cooling properly or not cooling at all
  • A noticeable clicking sound emanating from the back of the refrigerator, indicating the relay is trying to start the compressor but failing
  • The refrigerator starts and stops frequently, unable to maintain a constant temperature

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Need some help: I have an Amana top Refrigerator bottom freezer and it is not cooling. I hear a buzz every few minutes, compressor would not turn on. The compressor was very hot, food had to be thrown in garbage. I disconnected the compressor starting device and run capacitor, allowing it to cool and then I re-installed the devices. The compressor turned on. The running temperature of the compressor is about 137 degrees as measured with a laser thermometer. The refrigerator was cooling again. It appears that when the refrigerator reaches temperature to defrost and the compressor turns off the same problem occurs all over again when the unit calls for the compressor to re-start. The buzzing starts again and the refrigerator and freezer gets warm. Please note: While the compressor is running, one copper pipe is very hot, and the other copper pipe is warm, yet the regrig is cooling (thought one pipe had to be cold). When cool, the compressor pins are within the ohms limit. Is it possible that the unit is low on refrigerant? Is it a bad compressor? Can it be the compressor start up device or capacitor???

Answer

Hello Frank. Based on the information you provided, it sounds like the compressor W10160407 is bad and will need to be replaced. When the unit sits for a while, the pressure on the sealed system equalizes. Then when you plug the unit back up, the compressor does not have and pressure and starts ok. When the unit reaches correct temperature and shuts off, or goes through a defrost cycle, there is still some pressure in the system when the compressor comes on. If the compressor windings is bad, the compressor will not start, it just kicks out the overload. Hope this helps.
