The Compressor Start Relay is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators. This component helps to kickstart the compressor, facilitating the refrigeration cycle that cools the interior of the fridge.

Such issues can stem from electrical failures within the relay, physical damage, or wear and tear from regular use. When the relay does not function correctly, it can lead to inconsistent cooling and, in severe cases, cause the compressor to overheat and fail prematurely.

Symptoms of a failing Compressor Start Relay include:

  • The refrigerator not cooling properly or not cooling at all
  • A noticeable clicking sound emanating from the back of the refrigerator, indicating the relay is trying to start the compressor but failing
  • The refrigerator starts and stops frequently, unable to maintain a constant temperature

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Compressor Start Relay (Part Number: OEM17363361)

Hello Dave, thank you for contacting APP, If the issue with the GFCI is intermittent and the unit does not appear to be experiencing any other issues I would suspect the GFCI outlet itself or another source electrical issue. Also, the unit should be on a dedicated circuit with only the outlet for the unit and a breaker for the unit by itself instead of a shared circuit with multiple outlets and possibly other appliances or loads. If the unit is not on a dedicated circuit there may be issues like this, especially with GFCI or AFCI. To verify if the issue is with the GFCI or the unit you may try putting the unit on a different outlet that is not on a GFCI circuit via an extension cord and see if this circuit the unit is now on is tripping. Placing the unit on a separate circuit via an extension cord like this is for testing purposes only, we cannot recommend to leave the unit installed in this manner once the testing has been completed. Another method for testing whether it is the unit or the GFCI is to place the unit on a Surge Protector with a resettable switch and see if the issue goes away, this too is for testing purposes only. If either of these testing methods is used and the issue goes away then there is a source electrical issue. If the issue continues on the circuit the unit is on while utilizing either of these testing methods it may be that the Start Relay W10613606, the Defrost Heater WP67004188, or another component has failed.

Crock pot, If the evaporator fan is running, lights are on but the compressor and the condenser fan are not running. Check to see if there is 120 vac to the compressor. If there is but it will not start then this will be a compressor issue. If there is not then this will most likely either be damaged wiring or a control board that has failed.

Dale, based on the information provided, either the condenser coils are clogged up with dust and need to be cleaned or there is a sealed system failure. If the condenser coils are clean, an EPA-certified technician would be needed to diagnose and repair this failure.

Big09 for Model Number ASD2620HRZ

Refrigerator was not cooling properly, but fan was running. I watched several videos and found the Start Relay Capacitor W10613606 was not working properly. Replaced that part and everything worked fine. I let it run for several minutes prior to putting all back parts on and moving into place. I eventually unplugged, and put all backing pieces on and moved into place and plugged it in. After plugging it in the fan no longer runs, and the refrigerator does nothing. The lights are working inside so it has power. Any suggestions?

Hello Big09, the fan motors and compressor are all on the same circuit which is controlled by the defrost timer and then the cold control thermostat, at this point, it may have gone into a defrost cycle but only for about 20-30 minutes if longer than that both the timer and control needed to be checked.

Abe, if there is not frost occurring on the back panel of the freezer, the next step would be identifying if the compressor and condenser fan motor are operating or receiving 120VAC. If not, the refrigerator temperature sensor 12002355 would need to be tested for resistance to identify if it is operational as it should measure 10K Ohms at 77°F. If the sensor tests good, then the main control W10890094 would be the failure. However, if the compressor and condenser fan are receiving voltage but the compressor is not running, the failure would likely be in the start device W10613606.

SeeMore, Based on the information provided no the listed start device does not work for this model. This model uses an inverter board to operate the compressor instead of a start device.

Denise, After replacing the start device did the compressor start? If the compressor and fans is running then you will want to remove the rear cover and check the evaporator coils inside the freezer. If you do not see frost built up on the coils then it is a sealed system problem and you will need a refrigeration tech to come out and diagnose either a leak or bad compressor.

Jonathan, Couple things to check before we go any further. Does the compressor run? Are the fans in the freezer and condenser fan running? Check the back wall in the freezer and see if there is ice built up on that wall. [Defrost issue] Let us know what you find and we can go from there. This is a good starting point and tells us what and where to start digging to find the problem.
