Bill, It's not the transmission, In the spin cycle the transmission gears are "locked up" and don't move. Best guess at this point would be a worn out tub bearing/seal assembly and or a loose tub mounting clamp nut. The spin basket is tapping the outer tub and making the noise. There is also a possibility, that the brake rotor could be slipping and "chattering". Both repairs are "doable" for a "novice" with some basic skills, knowledge and tools.
