Bill F. for Model Number A8640 Maytag Washer Still working, but making a clanking sound during spin cycle. I suppose it's the transmission, but only a guess. What is your opinion, and should a novice try to fix this? Please advise, and many thanks. Bill
Answer Bill, It's not the transmission, In the spin cycle the transmission gears are "locked up" and don't move. Best guess at this point would be a worn out tub bearing/seal assembly and or a loose tub mounting clamp nut. The spin basket is tapping the outer tub and making the noise. There is also a possibility, that the brake rotor could be slipping and "chattering". Both repairs are "doable" for a "novice" with some basic skills, knowledge and tools. Read More...
