Chad S Lakewood , CO January 21, 2015 Appliance: Model MONTGOMERY WARD 5238 (PARTS COMMON WITH BROAN) Ram stopped working on trash compactor Installed a new Gearbox as the teeth on the small gear used to turn the chain were stripped. Disassembling the Trash Compactor was fairly easy once I was able to get it removed from the built-in cabinetry. However, the hardwood floor installers have installed the wood such that there was no way to pull out the trash compactor without removing the side panelling of the cabinetry. There was literally no clearance on the top or sides of the compactor to slide it out because the pedestals on the bottom kept hitting the hardwood. Installing the gearbox was a challenge because the way it attaches to the ram assembly. There are two small nuts that sit in a groove on the backside of the ram assembly. You have to thread two bolts through the gearbox and ram assembly without knocking the nuts out of there grooves. In addition, there is no easy way to access the backside of the ram assembly without taking out the motor. After moving the motor so I can actually see and put pressure on the nuts, the next issue was that they would not thread on to the bolts. The center of the nuts did not line up directly with the bolt when it came through the backside of the ram assembly, so it took quite a while to wiggle them around until they finally started threading on to the bolts. Once the gearbox was installed, it was relatively easy to re-install the motor and re-attach everything else. The trash compactor works great now.
