With the new light switch, I still had the same issue of the door not being high enough. The switch is much wider than the one on there. Removal wasn't too difficult, but I work with tools a lot.
I ended up lowering the switch housing where the thermostat knobs are, by loosening the screws, cutting up an old hotel key card to make a spacer about 3/8" thick, and using that miracle 3M black double-sided tape. NOW the switch lines up with the door.
Idk if the door was lowered somehow after years of use, but lowering the housing works fine and the gap isn't visible unless you're low to the ground.
