How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6009320 / WP4387835 Compressor Starting Device

Took the screws off the back plate at the bottom and watched the YouTube video on how to remove the cover plate for the starter and overload on the back of the compressor. Ended up snapping the old cover plate (brittle plastic) so I was glad the "kit" came with a new one. I used a small flat-head screwdriver and carefully pried off the starter and overload, then, with the new ones in hand, took the wires off the old ones and immediately put them on the new ones so I didn't lose track (there is an extra pin). I pushed the overload on first, then the starter and replaced the cover. I plugged in the fridge and could hear that the compressor was now starting up correctly. I used the shop vac and cleaned out the lint and dirt under the fridge and put the back panel back on. Replaced Compressor Starting Device. Followed the accompanying video, with advise of a thorough vacuum of all coils underneath. Three days, so far so good. All systems go. 

Watched video on how to replace relay, followed them exactly, WATCH where each wire does in video. Fridge and freezer started right up when plugged back in. 2 weeks now passed, 2000 whirlpool is working great. 

I replaced the overload protector attached to the side of the compressor. Upon inspection, I could easily see where the overload protector had blown. Shipping was very fast! Fridge is back to normal now. 

I replaced the compressor relay and the overload relay. Both items plugged directly into the side of the compressor (which was accessible from the back panel of the refrigerator) and each had one wire connected to them. The fix was simple once I did some research and determined that it was likely the relays causing the problem. Replaced open start cap and compressor start device 

Our 20 years Whirlpool ED25DQXDW00 had interior light, but wasn’t not cold; the compressor was not working. Checked the resistance on the compressor and its value were 2.45, 3.5 and 6 ohms, then the compressor was fine. Shaking the relay and heard the noise means the relay was defective. Ordered part from AppliancePartsPro.com and it was delivery two days later. Installed and it didn’t working, same as before. Rechecked and found out that the connector installed incorrectly. Re-connect as: hot wire (red) to common, neutral wire (white) to run and blue capacitor wire to start. Form triangle as: red to blue = 2.5 ohms, this is the start. Red to white is 3.5 ohms, this is the run. Reference: white to blue = 6 ohms for checking only (2.5 + 3.5 =/~ 6). There is no polarity at the compressor, so the only way is checking it resistance for the connection, that what I did. You should take the picture first before remove the connector, it save time and I forgot taking the picture before removed the connector, but it was learning experience. It worked great since. Ordered the start relay kit installed it and now both fridge and freezer are blowing ice cold. 

The new starting device got my compressor back up and running 

I ordered a new switch with the confirmation/help from a customer service technician and I installed it the day I received the part (within two days)! I was excited when my refrigerator started running!!! Paying for the switch versus a technician driving 30 minutes to my home to diagnose it and going to get the part and coming back to my house would have been more than the fridge was worth. Thanks!!
